CHARDHAM:
Yamunotri
It is the westernmost shrine in India and is recommended for the first  visit of Chardham. Dedicated to the goddess Yamuna, it is situated opposite Gangotri on the top of Bandar Poonch peak (3165m). Yamunotri is the source of river Yamuna which originates from Champasar Glacier. According to a legend, this secluded place was once the home of sage Asit Muni. There is a natural hot water pool, where potato and rice can
easily be cooked.

Location:From Rishikesh to Janakichatti the motor able distance is 215 kms. Rest 6 kms. from Janaki Chatti to Yamunotri is on foot.
Gangotri
Along the right bank of Bhagirathi stands the shrine of Gangotri dedicated to the goddess Ganga. According to Mythology, goddess Ganga- the daughter of heaven manifested herself in the form of a river to wash away the sins of King Bhagiratha's predecessors. Lord Shiva received the mighty river in his knotted locks to minimize the impact of her fall.
The physical source of the holy river is at Gaumukh, 23 kms further uphill along the Gangotri Glacier. The trek passes through the  beautiful vales Cheerbasa, Bhojwasa etc.

Location: Distance between Rishikesh and Gangotri is 266 kms.

Kedarnath
Lying at an altitude of 3581m on the head of river Mandakini, the shrine of Kedarnath is amongst the holiest places for the Hindus. Its origin can be found in the epic Mahabharat. According to the legend, The Pandavas sought he blessings of Lord Shiva after the battle of Kurukshetra. Lord Shiva eluded them for a long time but ultimately Pandavas found him at Kedarnath in the form of hump of a bull.

Kedarnath is one of Panch Kedars in Uttaranchal. The other four are Tungnath, Rudranath, Madmaheswar and Kalpeswar. The lingam is pyramidal in shape unlike its usual form. From Nov to May the shrine remains closed due to heavy blanket of snow. Winter prayers are performed at Okhimath (50 kms. to-wards Badrinath route).



Location: Rishikesh to Gauri Kund 230 kms. by road and 14 kms. trek from Gauri Kund to Kedarnath.
Badrinath
Along Alaknanda River (The mighty Ganges river was split into 12 rivers after descending into earth and Alaknanda river was one of them) and Neelkanth mountains as back drop, it is an important destination for every devout Hindu. Badri means wild berries and once this land was covered with berries. This temple dates back to Vedic times. Situated at an altitude of 3133m, the present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in 8th century. The temple remains closed in winter months due heavy cover of snow and winter ceremonies are performed 45 kms. downwards at Joshimath.

PANCH KEDARS:
Kedarnath:
It is one of the 12 Jyotirlings of Lord Shiva. Situated at an altitude of 3581m. and at the top of river Mandakini lies the Kedarnath shrine. Its origin can be found in epic Mahabharat. After the victory over Kauravas the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to atone for their sins. Lord Shiva repeatedly eluded them but Pandavas found him at Kedarnath in the form of lingam (hump). The other parts are worshipped at four other places: arm at Tungnath, mouth at Rudranath, navel at Madmaheswar, and hair at Kalpeswar.

The lingam at Kedarnath is pyramidal unlike its usual shape. A statue of the celestial bull stands at the entrance of the gate. The shrine is closed in winters due to heavy cover of snow.


Location: appx 225 kms. and 14 kms. trek from Rishikesh.
Madmaheswar:
Shiva is worshipped at Madmaheswar in the shape of navel shaped lingam. Located at the base of Chaukumbha peak at an altitude of 3289m, this classic temple has the North-Indian architecture. The water is so sanctified that even a few drops are considered sufficient for nirvana.

Location- appx 227 kms on road to Kalimath and 31 kms. on foot.
Rudranath:
Situated at an altitude of 2286m. The trek is through dense meadows. Shiva is worshipped in the shape of his face. The temple is surrounded by many lakes. Devotees come here to offer ritual obedience to their ancestors at Vaitrani river.

Location: appx 219 kms by road and 22 kms trek from Rishikesh.
Kalpeswar:
The favorite place for meditation of Durvasa Rishi under Kalpvriksha tree(fulfilling tree). Pilgrims worship at small rock temple at a height of 2134m. The sanctum is preceded by natural cave passage.

Location: appx 243 kms. on road and 12 kms. trek from Rishikesh.
Tungnath:
At an altitude of 3680m, the Shivas arms are worshipped. This place is situated 3 kms from Chopta. The trek is through meadows and offers a breathtaking view of Himalayan mountains.

Location: appx 232 kms. and 3 kms. trek from Rishikesh.

PANCH BADRIS:
Badrinath:

Bhavisya Badri:
The future Badri is located at an altitude of 2,744 meters, near Tapovan. According to the popular beliefs people would visit this shrine once present Badrinath is no more.

Yogdhyan Badri:
It is situated at an altitude of 1920m and named after the Pandavas. It is said that the Pandavas, after being victorious in their battle against the Kauravas, came to the Himalayas. At this place (Pandukeswar) the Pandavas handed over their capital Hastinapur to Parikshit. After that they chose the way of renunciation for a pathway to heaven.

Vridha Badri:
Before Badrinath was designated one of the four Dhams of Hindu worship by Adi Shankaracharya, the idol of Badrinath was enshrined and worshipped here. It is situated at an altitude of 1380m at Animath. This shrine remains open throughout the year.

Location: appx 250 kms. from Rishikesh
Adi Badri:
It has a group of 16 temples en-route to Ranikhet and near the confluence at Karnprayag. The main temple is dedicated to Lord Narayan with black stone. These temples date back to Gupta Age and were sanctioned by Adi Shankaracharya.

TRIJUGINARAIN
It is believed that this place was the venue of Shiv-Parvati marriage. An eternal fire, which is said to have been a witness to the marriage, burns in front of the temple even today.

appx 245 kms. from Rishikesh by road (5 kms. trek from Sonprayag or 15 kms. by road from Sonprayag).

PANCH PRAYAG:
Deoprayag:
It is the confluence of Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers. Important pilgrim spots are Shiva and Raghunath temples.

Location: appx 70 kms. from Rishikesh
Rudraprayag:
It is the confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. The temples of Rudranath and Chamunda Devi are noteworthy.
Location: appx 150 kms. from Rishikesh.
Karnprayag:
It is the confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar rivers. It has temples of Uma and Kama.
Location: appx 185 kms. from Rishikesh.
Nandprayag:
It is the confluence of Alaknanda and Nandakini rivers. It houses the temple of Gopalji.
Location: appx 200 kms. from Rishikesh
Vishnuprayag:
It is the confluence of Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers. The temple of Lord Vishnu is situated near Visnu Kund.
