the SS JOHN W. BROWN, taken during the 2000 Great Lakes cruise
in Cleveland, Ohio. |
Our primary
venue is the World War II Liberty Ship SS JOHN W. BROWN, the
oldest operating Liberty Ship left in the world, which is operated
by Project Liberty Ship. NAVHISDET members portray the men of the
United States Navy's Naval Armed Guard during the BROWN's many sailings,
as well as providing ceremonial details, assisting with logistical
preparations before and after sailings, and assisting with the many
ongoing restoration projects aboard ship.

members man a 20mm during an air attack. At right, the 3-inch
gun is manned and ready for action.

NAVHISDET
members have had the pleasure of working in close coordination with
a small cadre of Armed Guard veterans who volunteer hundreds of hours
aboard the BROWN.

Guest Interpreters and Displays Wanted
On
each of the BROWN's cruises we use 5-10 guest interpreters to provide
displays of WWII gear and historical interpretation. You'll sleep
in original troop transport berthing, you'll assist with loading
of passengers (great opportunity to use the Military Police impression),
provide living history interpretation during the cruises, and help
with tear down after the visitors are gone. The NAVHISDET approves
and coordinates guest interpreters for all BROWN events. If you
are an individual or a unit coordinator, contact
the NAVHISDET to find out about the rules for guest interpreters
and/or apply to participate.
