Historical Background

Archaeological evidence demonstrates India going through major transformations in the fifth century B.C.E. Previously, India was a Neolithic culture with the use of copper and bronze and the precious metals of gold and silver. However, during the fifth century B.C.E., India saw the intensive use of iron implements become widespread. During this period, archaeological and palaeontologic evidence display that there was a transition from an essentially nomadic based economies to settled agricultural communities.

Previous to the fifth century B.C.E., Indias dominant cultural tradition was the Vedic Brahminical, which later evolved into Hinduism. It is important to note that the Vedic tradition was deeply ingrained into Indian society. It can be said that it is from the Vedic tradition, and later, (and for more predominantly) the Hindu tradition that Indias caste system developed.
