A Hacksaw blade produce s quick microchannels. Just make sure you repress a bit
Keeping the pitch a constant temprature is important for even hight blobs. Heat the pitch to around 180 degrees. Some suggest putting the pitch in the oven to warm it, I use the stove. A metal spoon works best to pour the blobs. Just figure out what size blobs you want and spoon them on. I try to prop up the side of the tool I am pouring about 1/4" but it works without doing that also. If you get some strings from the pitch dont worry they are not a problem. Just clean off any loose ones.
Sub diameter lap. The masking tape on the edge protects the mirror. After pouring my blobs I warm the lap with warm tap water and press. Repeat as nessasary. If this would have been a full sized lap like the one below I could have made it a smaller lap by just removing the outer tiles with a sharp scraper.
Outer blobs can be added or scraped off as needed. Just keep pressing for good contact. By selective removing of edge blobs you can have star like laps easily
|
This is how I make my pitch laps
Start with a clean tool surface. I use tile tools. This Tool was covered in pitch blobs about 5 minutes before this picture was taken. I put the lap in a bag and use a sharp putty knife to remove the pitch and then wipe off the exess with turpentine. Just prior to pouring the pitch I heat the tool under hot tap water, dry it, then wipe it with turpentine. To melt pitch, put your pitch in a bag and bust it up into smaller chunks so it will melt faster. Heat it over low heat stiring now and then.
