Chapter 30 The next day, Pam, Dee, and I and all took a flight back to North Carolina. On the way home from the airport I insisted on stopping by the shop.
When we got there, it was slammed. I tried to talk Dee into letting me help out but she refused. I walked into the shop to talk to Billy. Hey, how are you? he asked, peeking out from underneath the hood. Better I answered. I talked to Billy for a few minutes, I told him that he was getting a raise for all the crap he had been through with my shop and that he could hire another mechanic if he wanted.
He agreed and thanked me for the raise.
We all went back to mine and Pams house, the ride back was fairly quiet. Finally, Dee spoke up. So do you remember anything from that day? she asked, looking at me from the drivers seat. I shook my head no, and looked out the window.
When we got to the house Dee and Pam made up a makeshift bed for me on the couch. I got comfortable and Dee decided that she needed to go to Wal-Mart to get a few things.
She left and Pam and I stayed, watching the race. We had missed half of it. When I turned it on Shane wasnt on the track. I wonder what happened. I said, to no one in particular. I decided to turn the race off since Shane wasnt running. I closed my eyes to take a short nap.
I slept for what seemed like 10 minutes, I opened my eyes to see that it had gotten dark. I glanced at the clock, 11:30 I thought to myself. I heard voices coming from the back porch. I got up and headed out there, grabbing a blanket from the chair on my way. I wrapped the blanket around my shoulders and opened the sliding glass door.
There were about 5 people in my back yard. I walked out, looking and finding Shane. He smiled when he saw me, moving his hands off his lap so I could sit.
I curled up on his lap and he slipped his arm around me. Everyone went back to their conversations. How are you feeling? Shane asked, putting his head on my shoulder. Better I answered. He handed me his beer, and I refused. Drugs I said, looking at him. Almost forgot he replied.
I collapsed on the couch as Shane showed everyone out. I am so happy to be back here with you Shane said, sitting down next to me. Yeah me too, and i'm glad that everyone came by to make sure I was alright I said.
Shane stood up and reached his arms underneath me. He picked me up in one quick swoop. Hmiel what are you doing?!?! I asked, surprised. Just helping you to bed he answered, smiling.
Shane laid me down on my bed and pulled the covers over me. He started to walk out the door. Babbyyy I whined. He turned around to look at me You arent staying? I asked, pouting. He chuckled and walked back over to the bed. Are you sure you want me to? I mean you need your rest. He asked.
I bit my bottom lip and nodded, hoping my poutiness would convince him to stay. Ok I will he said, walking to the other side of the bed. He got undressed (just down to his boxers) and climbed in. He pulled me close to him and wrapped his arms tightly around me. Do you need anything? he asked, rubbing my back. Nope, you know you dont have to wait on me hand and foot I chuckled. I know I just am happy that you are still here with me
Shane pulled me closer; I could feel his chest jump a little. Baby whats wrong? I asked, putting a finger under his chin to make him look at me. I saw the tears on his cheeks. Nothing he said, wiping them away. Shane I said sternly, trying to coerce him into telling me. He pulled back and looked at me. Its just that I JUST got you back. And to have someone almost take you away again was so scary. When I saw you laying on the concrete bleeding, I felt like I was going to blackout, but I knew I needed to help you. He said, the tears falling again. I smiled, wiping one away with my thumb.
Dont worry Shane, I am not going anywhere. |
