Chapter 32

The next morning, Shane and I went to the police station. When we walked in we asked the officer at the front desk for Detective Malone. He directed us through the offices and stopped at his office door. He knocked and pushed it open when the Detective directed us to come in.

When we walked in, he was on the telephone. I studied the office, a lot of clutter, and appreciation plaques on the wall. There werent any sign of family photos. I was snapped out of my daze when I heard the phone slam down. Sorry about that, sit Det. Malone said, pointing to some chairs that were sitting across from him. I sat down and Shane sat down next to me. I grabbed his hand and squeezed it showing Shane my nervousness.

Ok the detective said, flipping open a notebook and pulling a pen out of his pocket. How do you know Miss Corino? the detective directed his first question to me. Well I met her at a party, through Shane I said. He looked over at Shane, I met her at the track about two years ago Shane answered his silent question. Had there ever been any sign that she could be violent? Had she ever made any sort of threats to you or Mr. Hmiel? I got nervous. Shane squeezed my hand and looked at me. There were a few times when I would catch her driving by my work, she called there a few times. One of Beths close friends told me that she was afraid Beth would hurt me or Shane

And this friends name? the detective asked. I looked at Shane seeing as I only knew her as Mel. Melanie Bergen, she lives with Beth Shane answered for me.

After a couple of hours of questioning, Shane and I were finally able to leave. See babe, that wasnt too bad Shane said, opening the car door for me. I slid inside and shut the door.

Shane and I stopped by his place on the way to mine. When we pulled into the driveway I noticed Tiffs car. When we got a little closer I noticed that she was sitting in the front seat, her head in her hands. Babe go inside and gimme a few I said, opening my door. Shane nodded and did as I asked. I walked over to the other side of Tiffs car and tried to pull the handle, it was locked. I tapped lightly on the window. She leaned over and unlocked the door. I climbed in and shut the door behind me. Whats wrong? I asked, noticing the tears streaking her face.

She took a deep breath, its all happening again she sighed. What is? I asked. Its just I never see Tyler anymore. I know he has work, and I dont mind that he works; I understand that his job is important. But when he comes home, he doesnt call, doesnt come by. Its just that I want to see him when he is not working and obviously he doesnt want that her sadness had now turned into anger. Want me to talk to him? Or beat him up? I asked, trying to get her to laugh.

She giggled a little, Ah ha it worked! I said, poking fun at her. I got out of the car and walked towards the house, thinking about what I was going to say to Tyler.

When I walked in, Shane and Tyler were sitting on the couch watching TV. Hey I said, sitting between Shane and Tyler. I turned to face Tyler and started to speak Do you love her? I asked, looking into his eyes to see if he was telling the truth. He nodded yes. Ok, well if you dont want to lose her again then you need to pay more attention to her Tyler started to speak but I put my hand up to stop him. She doesnt want you to not go to the track and work; she just wants attention when you are home. Would it really hurt to spend like 2 or 3 nights a week at her house? I asked. Tyler nodded no. Ok now go talk to her, she is in the driveway.

Tyler hurriedly walked outside. Shane chuckled as he wrapped his arms around me, I got my own little Dear Abby he said. I leaned back against his chest, I know. Ill bill Tyler later I joked as I pulled my legs up on the couch.
