| Chapter 3 Kasey did call the next night, and the night after that, and many more nights after that. For weeks, it had almost become routine for us to talk before we went to bed. It was almost like when we were in high school and we would spend hours on the phone talking about nothing in particular. Shay, um, in two weeks we will be in Cali racing. I was wondering if you wanted to come. Kasey asked with a lot of hesitation in his voice. I dont know Kase, it all depends on work I said, a little sad. Dammit he replied I want to see you he stated. I huffed, these past 3 weeks had already been better than I expected them to be, I knew it wouldnt last. Kasey, this is why I said we shouldnt have done this. I knew that once it got to be more, and our schedules were too busy for each other that we would start fighting. I waited to see if he had anything to say, Like I said, if I can get a break for the weekend I may be able to come I explained. The rest of the conversation was coming off cold from the other end of the line. Well Mr. Frost I am going to bed. I have a long day tomorrow. I said. Kasey sighed and said a quick goodbye hanging up the phone before I had a chance to say it back. Well ok then I said, putting my phone on the night table next to the bed. I quickly fell asleep and was woken up a few hours later by the sound of my cell phone. I looked at the caller ID and recognized the area code but not the number. When I was with Kasey while he was living in North Carolina years earlier, I had become accustomed to receiving calls from a lot of numbers in the 704 area code. I hit the silence button, rolled back over and went back to sleep. **** About a week went by, I hadnt returned any of Kaseys calls or messages. If it wasnt going to work, I was not going to let my heart get broken. On the Wednesday before Kasey was supposed to be racing in Cali, I received more calls from him than normal. I listened to each message, enjoying the sound of his voice. I missed him so much; it almost hurt me to listen to the messages. Message 1: Shay its me, um I am in Cali. Just letting you know the invite is still open. I miss you. Message 2: Shay if I have to stay out here another day and come to Enumclaw I will. I want to see you. Message 3: Please call me. I felt bad; I knew that this was not only hurting me but him. I had been miserable for the last week and a half, but for all outward appearances, nothing was wrong. I walked into work, talking with one of my co-workers on the way up the elevator. When I got off on my floor, I noticed my secretary smiling from ear to ear. Someone have too much coffee again? I asked, taking my messages from her. She stood up to follow me into the office, which was an everyday thing. I opened the door and it suddenly hit me, the smell of roses. I saw the bouquets of them everywhere, on my desk, the window sill, the bookshelf. My mouth dropped, I was amazed by the amount of roses that were gathered in my office. I turned and looked at Tiffany, she just shrugged. Ill leave you be for a moment she said, turning and shutting the door behind her. I walked towards the desk, picking up the vase and smelling the beautiful flowers. I noticed a card; I grabbed it and set down the roses. I slowly opened the envelope; another one fell out of the card once I opened it. I read the card Shay, I dont want this. I want us to be happy and enjoy what we have. I love you, Kase I smiled as I thought of him. Leaning down, I picked up the envelope that had fallen out of the card. I opened it and pulled out its contents, laying them on the desk. Hmmm, I said, reading the little note. If you want to come. I picked up the plane ticket and the pass for the race. I chuckled he must want me to go pretty badly if he went through all this I said to myself. I do I heard his voice, I turned, there he was standing next to the door, smiling. BACK HOME NEXT |
