The first ones happened when I was only about two years old. I would have visions/dreams that a very large bird was emerging from the ceiling and swooping down over me. All I could do at that age was shudder and duck under the covers! Yet still, these woke up in me the knowledge that there is more to life than just five senses.
By the time I was nine, I was telling my classmates in "show and tell" about the ghosts in the hallway the night before. This did not win me any friends, and the ghosts began to make me afraid. They would not answer me when I called out to them, and this lack of response to me made me feel very uncomfortable. They may have been the astral bodies of my father and brothers, sometimes very elongated and distorted looking, which also made me afraid.
Yet one night I got up the courage to get up out of bed and approach them and ended up chasing them down the hallway and out of the house through the attic roof! Though I didn't realize it at the time, this was also my first ghost busting experience. My parents also got very concerned about what was happening, and being somewhat fundamentalist, they took me to the minister of the church to pray!
A few years later, I was staying with a school friend Geoff at a family owned set of cottages near the beach. His family had owned them for nearly a hundred years. One night during my stay, I woke up to go to the bathroom and looked out the bedroom window. To my amazement there was a woman standing there dressed in a blue and white print dress and bonnett, feeding some black birds on the ground in front of her with some seeds from a pouch tied around her waist. She was softly glowing and that was the only way I could see her, as it was very dark and there were no outside lights. She did not seem to see me, unlike the astrals in the hallway who seemed to watch me.
It was gently raining outside, but that did not seem to bother her nor the birds. I stood watching her for probably ten minutes and then went to try and wake up my friend so he could see her too. But when I finally got him awake, she was gone. Yet there were still a number of the birds still there in a small circle, eating something on the ground. The family asked me to describe her to them and what she was wearing, and afterwards showed me a picture of her.. she was Geoff's great grandmother who had died there in 1911!
Some years later one of my most significant ghost busting experiences occurred when I was helping a friend of mine, David, build a house in a wooded area. He was living in another house he had stayed in for a some years before and while he built his house, and in that house, he had trouble sleeping as there always seemed to be a lot of commotion throughout the night waking him up.
The first night that I stayed at his house, sure enough, they kept me up too, parading through the house, turning the lights on and off and otherwise just making noise. The second night I had talked with David and told him that there were two men there who had died years ago and didn't realize they were dead. They were the ones making the racket. He didn't know who they were, so I took it upon myself to approach them. That night when I went to sleep, I dreamed (or was having an out of body experience) I was in the living room, except that it did not look like the current room. There was a door in a place where there wasn't one that they used to come in and out of the house. When they came in, I stood right in front of them, and asked who they were. They tried to walk past me and not even acknowledge I was there, but I knew they could see me. They were confused and didn't like me, not knowing who I was or why I was in "their" house. They went around me and turned off the light, and I followed them and turned it back on. (symbolic of trying to "turn me off").
Yet each time they came by, I got more and more assertive, and finally barred their way through the house... my senses very alert and focused on them. I faced them and told them that the house had been sold long ago, and that they had died years ago, and it was time for them to move on from the house as they were disturbing it's current occupant. Apparently they didn't even realize they were affecting anyone else, they were so busy with their hustle and bustle. That was the first time when they looked me in the eyes, and they seemed to know that I was telling the truth, but they had not wanted to accept it. I took this as the moment to tell them that they would have to leave now, and motioned for them to go out the door. After a few moments, they lowered their heads and walked out the door and I woke up. I was very charged up and awake in an instant, but I felt that they had truly gone.
The next morning David got out some old technical drawings of the house since he was the one who had renovated it. I was able to tell him where the door was which he verified he had himself changed, but the old occupants never realized it was different. They still saw their own reality, and not the current house. Months later, David mentioned to me that the house was peaceful and he had not had any more problems sleeping through the night.
