Example Interpretations

I would like to give examples on interpreting dreams in this section. First I will present a dream from my own records, and then one that was given to me to interpret. I will include first the dream as it was recorded, and then my interpretation, with comments indicating how I came to the ideas I had or what associations I used to solve the dream's riddle.

Ok, now for the first dream.
8-28-85 I dreamed that I was at my girlfriend's house, and a psychic was there giving a reading at a table in the living room. From where I was sitting I could see my girlfriend in the kitchen washing her hands at the sink. I also could see out the front window of the house, and as I looked out I saw a large jet plane take off from the airport and stall out and crash into the university buildings after it flew across the interstate highway. The crash caused the university's stadium grandstands to be blown up and over the highway and they crashed into the houses on the other side.

When I was fully awake, I began to be quite concerned that an actual jet liner was going to crash land soon, but as I thought about the dream, it's meaning became clear to me. I knew it was a set of symbols which was telling me to take notice. A plane crash is a pretty devastating event to behold, so I could guess that the dream held great importance to me at that time.

In the dream then, I was watching someone getting a psychic reading, indicating that the dream was about my future. The reading in this dream probably refers to my (then)current relationship, since a breakup of this relationship would be devastating to us both. My girlfriend washing her hands was symbolic of her leaving her current affairs.. she was "washing her hands of any further involvements". The jet liner flying across the interstate indicated she would make a trip soon. Here is an element in this dream that turned out to be prophetic. As an aside here I would like to mention that in my own dreams, when there is some kind of explosive or catastrophic type of scene going on, it usually has a prophetic element in it which is personal to me and does not reflect a social situation.

Since it crossed the interstate and then crashed into the university buildings.. the very same buildings where my girlfriend worked at that time, it meant to me that she would leave suddenly. The crash would be like taking a "crash course" in something, meaning that it happens in a short amount of time. The crash also of course has the emotional aspect of being a terrible thing, which her leaving was!

The grandstands going over and across the highway was a metaphor that she would then make a "grandstand" in a city far away. Again here is another prophetic element, that she would get a very good paying job. Yet the beauty of these very compact symbols shows itself, because those very grandstands... the very success in another city, would cause a lot of emotional turmoil that many people would acutely feel, me being the primary one, by her sudden departure.

Gradually I came to the realization that this dream was telling me that my girlfriend would probably fly to another city, get a good job and leave suddenly.. within a few months of the dream. In late August she told me she had sent out job resumes to several companies, but never expected to hear back from any of them. I told her at that time that the dream was saying that one of them would call and she would move in a short period of time out of state. She did not recieve this well, in fact she was very angry exclaiming that I couldn't know things like that.

The dream happened in late August of 1985, and by Thanksgiving she had moved to St. Louis and gotten a great job at a large corporation. It came true, and the move was quite sudden, and did indeed cause a lot of emotional pain not just for her and me, but many other of her friends and relatives. Again I will mention that it is in part the dramatic nature of this dream that gave the clues that it concerned the relationship I was in at that time, as nothing else in my life would really have called forth that sort of dream.

So that is one dream from my records, let's take a look at a dream a friend of mine had recently. Here is her dream.
"I had another interesting dream last night...I was making a home for myself on a deserted tropical island, and for some reason I think Jerry was going to join me there with our child. Anyhow, I began swimming in the ocean (which I would NEVER do normally!) and this huge Orca whale came up right next to me and smiled at me (don't ask how a whale smiles, but she did! LOL). She let me climb on her back and hang on to her dorsal fin, and she swam all over the place with me. We played and swam around; I went underwater with her and she smiled at me again, then took me deep down until I could hardly see the surface...it was beautiful - I saw all kinds of manta rays silhouetted above us, sharks, etc. but I wasn't scared with the Orca there. The odd thing was, I had no trouble being underwater...when normally I freak out in the deep end of a swimming pool! LOL Anyway I have no idea what that dream was all about, but it was alot of fun! *grinz*"

And now the interpretation.

What a neat dream with the Orca!! You had no problem because the water you were in was of course not really water.. but only a symbol for your own searching into yourself and your unconscious mind. The orca was a symbol for your inner spirit guide whom you could trust and even have fun with! Her/his task was to help you learn how to swim.. or metaphorically to dive way down inside yourself to get information, associations, past life info.. and a host of other things that will now be more available to you. You need never be afraid with the orca there, and you can think of him as your symbol for things of this nature. He is really your guide/guardian angel if you prefer, but the symbol also indicated your victory over fear in facing some of the issues in your life right now.

And here we can't miss the reference to Jerry, since he was supposed to join you on your island. Now (the fact is), he didn't show, and the orca was there to help you through this. I am not sure what it means, but what we can't really know is whether this is a fear you have, separations in the relationship that occur that sometimes leave you alone, or if this is a literal symbol. So it might not be a good idea to make your home on a tropical island.. away from everyone else, hoping that he will join you. I know that might be your idea of a sanctuary, and so it probably is, but alone would be very lonely indeed if things do not work out in the long run.

My line of reasoning here was that the idea of living on a tropical island is a type of symbol here for living in isolation from others, something that I suggested might not be in her best interests. We all do this to some degree, yet she is doing all the building of things on this island, and he does not make an appearance at all. I take this as a sign that she may want the relationship very much and puts alot of effort and attention into it, but her dream seems to be saying that he is "not there for it".

It may also be important to mention that sometimes dreams are only expressing our fears, and so this part of the dream.. the beginning where she is on the island waiting for him could well be just her fear of being abandoned coming out and is not "a sign" that her relationship with him is doomed. In fact the rest of the dream with the Orca being so positive and uplifting certainly suggests to me that whatever does happen with Jerry, it will be for the best and she will be able to handle it and still be a happy person.

Just to complete this section on her dream, I would like to insert her later comments on my interpretation, of course with her permission.
"And how neat, to see my very own dream spotlighted online! LOL You know, re-reading that dream and your interpretation really made me think about it again...especially after all that's happened in the last week. I think you were right to say that Jerry not appearing in the dream may have been a symbol of my fears, because that's exactly what I was so afraid of...and also a symbol of both of us needing more time alone. But it did let me know that whatever happened I'd be OK...so here you've nailed it yet again! ROFLOL The interesting thing is, lately I've been having alot of dreams that involve Jerry and a child...I can't recall details, but the theme is there. I've got to break down and start a dream journal!"
