On this page I will put things that are different to what we in Australia are used to. General everyday differences that I notice and get a chance to take a photo of. |

No picture due to lack of BBQ sauce in England. Please send appropriate sized picture for inclusion in web site. Update: Picture coming soon. |
BBQ Sauce BBQ Sauce Doesn't exist in England. This means that every single Egg and Bacon role in the country is sub-standard. Donna seems to believe it exists but I've yet to find it. Brown sauce however is the substitute. HP sauce is part of the brown sauce family as is Daddies favourite. They are no substitute for the BBQ sauce that comes in the red bottle with the basket at the bottom. Even the runny no frills stuff would do. I think an there is money to be made here. Update: I sourced 2 bottles of Eta BBQ sauce from the Aussie shop (the red bottle with the basket at the bottom). One went to Greg and Amanda and the other one has been used regularly on our weekend breakfast :). |

Currency Here is some English Money. From top to bottom, notes to coins we have: 20 pound, 10 pound 5 pound.2 pound, 1 pound, 50 pence, 20 pence, 10 pence, 5 pence, 2 pence, 1 pence. The money is made of paper and lacks the colour that Australian money has. It is a bit wider and didn't fit inside my Aussie wallet, luckily Donna's grandfather was kind enough to give me one of his spares. Another interesting point is the 2 and 1 pence coins. I can honestly say Australia made the right decision to get rid of the 2 and 1 cent pieces, they only get in the way.

Electricity As most people probably new, the power sockets over here are different. They have 3 very thick prongs with the top 2 perpendicular to the bottom one rather than on a 45 degree angle. The supply is still the same so a simple adapter can be purchased that allows you to use electrical devices designed for Australian use. In hind sight I should have brought a power board with me. It would have made things a bit easier and I could have managed with only one converted instead of the 2 we bought.

| Escalators | Escalators Anyone who has worked in Sydney understands the escalator system. You stand on the left and you over take on the right. Why does it work that way? I have been known to put to much thought into some things but I assumed that it was based on the road rules of driving on the left and overtaking on the right . In England its reversed with people standing on the right and overtaking on the left. This also applies to the walkways in the train stations. Not a big difference but definitely one that's noticeable. |

| Fish and Chips | Fish and Chips There is a bit of a difference here. Firstly, there is a variety of fish to choose from. You don't just ask for fish, you need so ask for cod or some other variety. Scampi is also often on the menu. A lot of places have the fish and chips pre-cooked and sitting in a warm area so that you get them instantly, not unlike Mcdonald's hamburgers. Something that I have come to appreciate is that you can order "small chips open please". This means that the shop attendant will create a cone out of the chip paper and fill it with chips, leaving it open so that you can eat them on the move. Some of the shop keeps perform a strange technique or chip flipping while that add salt and vinegar (similar to when you see a cook flipping vegetable is a frying pan). I think it takes them years to perfect. |

| Flavoured Milk Flavoured Milk in this country is crappy. There is no equivalent to a Move or and Oak, instead they have this stuff that looks like chocolate and strawberry water. I think is must be some pretend milk stuff. I wonder if English people travelling in Australia enjoy our Flavoured milk? |

Keyboards Keyboards have the @ symbol and the " symbol in the opposite locations. It reminds me of a C64 keyboard. they also have a symbol for the obvious reason. The pipe "|" is on the other side of the keyboard and hard to locate and the "~" has also been moved. |

| Sausages | The Sausage I'm not sure who invented the sausage and there's most likely some dispute over it in Germany somewhere. I know however that the English have no concept of what a real sausage should be. The English sausages are short, stumpy, thin and lacking in variety and flavour. Pork sausages are about that only kind I can find, that and black pudding. The supermarket shelves do have some varieties that look like real sausages but the majority suck. Having said that I still buy them because they are meat and they are cheap. English sausage, you've let the country down. 1 out of 10. |

Soft Drink The soft drink cans here look like their growth has been stunted. They are 330ml instead of the 375ml cans that we get back home. This particular can is from England although a lot of shops must import their stock as they have foreign writing on them. When this happens a little sticker is put on the item with the ingredients written in English. |

Pints As you may know, beer over here is drunk by the pint. Anyone who has ventured into O'donohues or another Irish pub will have most likely drunk a few pints. I have explained the Schooner/middy system many times since I arrived but I really think that pints of beer makes more sense. I have been asked why we have Schooners and the only thing I have come up with is that a Schooner of light beer and a middy of full strength is 1 standard drink. If there is a better reason then someone please email it to me.

Spotted Dick As soon as I saw this I knew I had to show the guys back home. The only person I know in Australia who would eat this for dessert is Melissa. It turns out that the English variety is like a muffin with lots of raisins in it. We had ours with custard and they tasted alright. I doubt I'll be trying the Australian variety in a hurry. |

Toilets All the toilets I have encounter thus far have a handle on the side like this one. Some times I have to push it several times to get it to flush. The bathrooms have carpet on the floor as well. |
