RELIEF OF DEVIZES 13/07/1808
This was our third  Napoleonic Association Wargame Demo Team's scenario using  our own version of  British Army 'Kriegsspiel' 1815 Draft Rules at 'Attack' Devizes on 13 July 2008 (anniverary of Battle of Roundway 1643!)

We will be running the game again a Colours Wargames Show, Newbury Racecourse 12-13 September 2008 along with our new Battle of Newbury game.  We used members of the host  Devizes Club as the off-table playing commanding for the  Red and Blue Brigades  occassionaly disturbing them  for five minutes every 30-60 minutes. The roll of Battery, Battalion and Squadron commanders was taken by members of the public with knowledge of the principles of Napoleonic warfare and able to spare a few minutes to take part in the game. The game started at 10am and reached result by 3pm, but without stopping to explain the game to members of public could have been easily played in 2 hours.

The idea behind scenario is based on the historical Battle of Roundway, where the Royalist commander, Hopton (Blue) was under siege by Waller (Parliament - Red). A flying Royalist  cavalry column is sent from Oxford to relieve Devizes. Waller marches out onto Roundway Down to meet the Royalist cavalry. The Parlimentary cavalry are beaten and run off over a very step hill, while Hopton marches out of Devizes to take Waller in the back.

Players should not assum the opposing force will be as per the historic battle nor that their objectives will be the same.

The map covers from Devizes in bottom left corner to 2 miles  south west of Beckhampton in top right corner.

Good luck !!
