Kriegsspiel rules were published in 1824 by Lt von Reisswitz (Prussian Guard Artillery) using  principles of Napoleonic warfare. He is founder of wargaming as we know it and played games on 7" to mile maps with units represented by porcelain, lead or wood blocks and used to training officers  commanding a 'red' or 'blue' army rather than Prussians v French.

The rules Bill Leeson translate into English in 1980 have been out of print for a number of years. In 2007 the TooFatLardies republished the rules, map and scenarios in full colour bringing them into the 21st centurary with a much friendlier format than used in the translation from German.

Von Reisswitz first played the rules in draft form at the Berlin Millitary Accademy in 1812. At that time several British Officers were attached to the Prussian and Russian Armies. As well as being the Wargames Officer of the Napoleonic Association, I am also unit commander of the Royal Engineer re-enactment unit. We incorporate into our living history displays of Napoleonic engineering and map making - wargaming in period. In the past we have used 7mm figures similar to those used by Silbourn for the 1830 Waterloo Model.

However, we have decided to truely  demonstate wargaming as it would have been played during the final years of the war using Kriegsspiel. We have style ourselves as officers of the new Royal Military Accademy at Sandurst, playing a British 1815 draft verion of Kriegsspiel. (In reality the British Army did not formally  adopted Kriegsspiel until 1884)
