A Symphony to Finish

Neil Allen's Biography.

I was born in Cincinnati,Ohio where I attended all the levels of schooling that would have me. I think that they passed me along just to make me S.E.P (someone else's problem). I loved watching television and became rather good at it, if I might say so. In fact, my mother often admonished me that if I could get a job where all I had to do was to watch TV, I would probably get one. What a concept! I wish I would have thought of that. Well, television jobs were pretty difficult to find, especially if the only experience that one had was changing channels and adjusting the aluminum foil on the rabbit ears. I did have some early experience in the radio medium, with the added technical experience of putting my favorite "rocket radio" back together after my younger sister so adeptly disassembled it. I also had some disc jockey experience working at my friend's pirate radio station which went on the air daily upon returning home from high school. After graduation from H.S., through a mutual friend, I got a job at a small country station in northern Kentucky. My heart was still set on television, but you couldn't get a job in broadcasting unless you had a job in broadcasting. So, I accepted a "position" making 50 dollars a week and all the records I could eat. Soon thereafter, with my appetite increasing and my bank account shrinking, I pestered the Chief engineer at a new TV station in town until he had to give me a job just to keep me quiet. Now, having experience in the field, I was able to get on at the CBS affiliated station in Cincinnati as a broadcast technician, where I worked for the next 15 years. Seeing the quality of television production on the skids, along with a marriage, it was time to look elsewhere. As they say, television is called a medium because it is never well done. Anyway, I relocated to the Nation's Capitol where I did the same type of work for Uncle Sugar only working days, holidays off and weekends off, something unheard of in broadcasting at the time. Now, 20 years later I'm still there as a manager and writing books, which I hope you will enjoy. I live in Northern Virginia with my wife and the three felines in the book. I have 3 children, 5 grandchildren and one great grandchild. "Symphony" gives you a look inside of the broadcasting industry that you never see, and the effect that it has on the technicians and their families. Although the book is a fiction, it is based on my realities and feelings. Thanks for giving it a chance.
