The Cultural Interpretation and Living History (CILH) Section of the National Association for Interpretation was "born" at the 1996 National Interpreter's Workshop in Billings, Montana when a group of NAI members recognized the need for additional training and networking opportunities specific to cultural interpretation and living history. In short order, over 200 signatures petitioning for the establishment of the section were gathered and presented to the NAI Board of Directors. The NAI Board unanimously voted their approval for the CILH section on December 20, 1996 with Rich & Diane Pawling serving as Acting Co-Chairs until formal elections could be held in the fall of 1997. The elected CILH officers (1998-1999) included: Chair Janice Elvidge, Vice Chair John Luzader, Secretary Andy Kardos, and Treasurer Diane Pawling.

The CILH Section currently has over 450 members and is one of the fastest growing sections in NAI. Its membership-approved mission is "To promote and improve the interpretation of cultural and historical issues through training, education, publications and interdisciplinary communication".

Products and services offered by CILH (in addition to those offered by NAI) include a quarterly newsletter, Kinship With the Past, and an an established two day training curriculum taught by a team of CILH trainers and offered as a pre-workshop at NAI national workshops, section workshops and regional workshops upon request See other sections of this web site for more details.
