The
first official meeting of the Lewis and Clark Interpreters Group was held
at the NIW in Syracuse, New York in October 1999. There were over 30 people
who attended, representing a wide variety of agencies and private interests.
As I mentioned in "From The Chair" in the last issue (Fall 1999),
the Lewis and Clark Interpreters Group is to form a networking opportunity
for people interested in Lewis and Clark. At the initial meeting, participants
learned which groups are doing which activities and which individuals
are responsible for which tasks and goals.
When the meeting was opened to discuss what was needed to establish a network of interpreters, the group determined that a listserve would be helpful in enabling many people to stay in contact with each other. David Gilbert of Harpers Ferry volunteered his services to develop the listserve. In addition, Laurie Heupel has agreed to initially administer the listserve. We hope to have this service up and running in the near future. The next meeting of interedted Lewis and Clark professionals will be at the training workshop in Duluth, Minnesota, March 19-22, 2000. I will not be able to attend, but a number of Lewis and Clark interpreters have volunteered to help run a meeting to allow more people to get together and network. We will have the opportunity to meet again at the CILH workshop in St. Louis, Missouri (April 5-9, 1000). The workshop will feature eight concurrent sessions on Lewis and Clark, as well as a Lewis and Clark Interpreters Group meeting on April 8th.
