The University of Alabama at Birmingham Chapter of the NAACP set out to reactivate its chapter in August of 2003. At one of the organizing meetings on August 19th of 2003 which was attended by Andrea Patterson, Tammie Green, and Brian McCoy. There was discussion of ways to get funds that the chapter could get off to a good start. There were no funds available to the young organization's group. After long discussion, over 4 hours worth, Brian McCoy proposed a gospel concert (originally called the UAB NAACP Gospel Benefit). Andrea Patterson then added by calling it The Gospel Classic. Everyone laughed at the name but it ultimately helped with the publicity of the event since most famous events in the city are called "Classics." The 1st Gospel Classic was held October 19th 2003 at More Than Conquerors Faith Church with Minister Prince Yelder serving as the emcee and the rest is history. |
