Mystic Order of Druids

~*~ Druid Spotting ~*~

by Faol Liath
of the Mystic Order of Druids

So, you think you know Druids do you?

You’ve seen them on the TV at midsummer at Stonehenge. There they are acting weird, dressed in white bed sheets waving swords and staffs in the air, beating drums and chanting gods knows what as the sun rises.

Or maybe you remember the druid from the Asterix books, ‘Getafix’, Long white beard, long white hair and the bed sheet clothing once again.

Look again, not at the media portrayal of Druids but at who they are.

Here, I’ll make it a bit easier for you, take a peek through this ‘Patented Druid Spotter Scope’

See how it looks down upon the earth as if by satellite imagery.

Spotted them yet? No?

Let’s zoom in a bit, on, lets say. Britain.

What do you mean you can’t see any?

Here, let me have a look. There! That’s one, just there.

What do you mean it doesn’t look like a Druid?

Oh, I see, still hung up on the stereotype. Yes, it is a woman, women can be Druids too. You don’t need the ability to grow a beard to become a Druid. It is the ability to live by the basic tenets of Druidry, Truth, Honour and Justice.

Here, let’s find another.

There!

Yes, it is a soldier on manoeuvres.

No, not all Druids are hippies who never grew up, you can find them in all walks of life, Police officers, Nurses, Housewives, Soldiers, Sailors and Candlestick makers. OK, So I was poking fun when I said the last one, but you get the idea. Druids are people too, just like you. They live by the tenets and they help others where they can. Most have made some sort of oath that binds them to the land. An oath that they hold to be most sacred.

Since you asked so nicely, I’ll give you an example of what an oath contains, although every oath is different.

When I swore my oath the only witness was the Land. It is to the land I swore my oath. I won’t give it word for word as it is personal. However, I will give an outline of what it contained:

"To be the voice for that which cannot speak.
To be the voice for those whose voice has left them.
To carry the fight for those whose strength has left them.
To hold respect for the land and work with and for the land when needed.
To work for and with those who require my help or guidance."

Alright then, let’s play with this dial on the scope. It’s the one marked ‘temporal correction’. If we twiddle it this way we can change the date we are looking at, we can dial it up to midsummer.

There you go, have a look at Stonehenge, see the Druids now? No, not the beardy weirdy ones in robes. The ones on the periphery, those dressed in regular clothes. Let’s look further out, how about one of the big cities? Birmingham, perhaps?

Can you spot one now?

You can? Show me!

YES!

That’s a Druid alright; see how he is just stood watching and waiting for the sunrise. No distinguishing features that scream ‘DRUID’ either. There he is in his local park, waiting. See how he just gave the newly risen sun the barest of nods, just recognition, no pomp and ceremony.

So, do you think you could spot a Druid without the scope now?

Not easy is it?
