Ujaset's Tail

And when it spoke, it could only be described as intensely personal.

"What is half of dragon but has not a wyrmling's strength?"
"What is half of canine but has not a mongrel's length?"
"What is it that has two halves but has but half to stand on?"
"Answer correctly and be rewarded."

Looking at the bodies on the ground, the cost of an incorrect answer seemed clear and decidedly unpleasant.

After uttering it's riddle the creature sat back, at ease and motionless except for it's tail swishing back and forth like a snake on the hunt.

After much discussion and gnashing of teeth, Whiff finally excitedly voiced what he believed was the solution. They all agreed that it fit the clues in the riddle so he spoke directly to what we now recognized as a sphinx.

"The answer to your riddle is a kobold!" ... Whiff was impressive in his apparent confidence.

For a brief moment, the apparition was silent . Then it began to speak.

"Your answer is ... correct." It paused to breathe what seemed to be a sigh of relief. "I am called Ujaset," and he continued, telling his story.

Earlier that same evening he was set upon in his lair by a number of kobolds and killed. However, the manner of his death has prevented him from "moving on". He requested the group's help in avenging his death and thereby freeing his spirit. As compensation, he gave them leave to avail themselves of any and all they could find in his lair.

They agreed to take up the charge. Being that they'd already broken camp, they immediately set off to follow the creature's instructions to his lair. After traveling east for most of the day, they came upon a cave deep in the hills to the south of the trail. They approached slowly and found a number of kobolds; two on guard and the rest milling about within. They were dispatched in short order.
