Campaign Background

  • Our game takes place on the continent of Faerūn on the planet Toril. This is also known as the Forgotten Realms.
  • We're using the new 3rd Edition Rules recently released by Wizards of the Coast.
  • The current Faerūnean year is 1372. (Which you probably already know if you've perused the "In-Game" material ... you have read through the material haven't you?).

What you need ...

There are a few things you'll need to make the game easier to play and certainly more fun.

  • Your own set of dice. The usual set includes:
  Sides Quant. Notes
4 1
  • Also referred to as "d4"
6 1
  • Also referred to as "d6"
8 1
  • Also referred to as "d8"
10 2
  • Also referred to as "d10".
  • These are generally percentage dice. You may find them in sets with 0..9 in one die and 00..90 on the other. In this case you'll only need one set.
12 1
  • Also referred to as "d12"
20 1
  • Also referred to as "d20".
  • By far the most used die in 3rd Edition D&D. It might be a good idea to pick up more than one.
  • Books
The resource links are to Amazon.com, but you can also find these at wizards.com and most book stores.
Core Titles
  Resources Notes
Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition Player's Handbook If you buy no other book, buy this one. It is the definitive reference for gaming rules.
Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (A Forgotten Realms(r) Campaign) If you only by two books, make sure this is the second one. This is written especially for the Forgotten Realms where our campaign takes place. This enhances the Player's Handbook's rules and adds more information specific to each region of the Faerūn  including geography, magic, political boundaries and intrigue, and much more.
Dungeons and Dragons Third Edition Dungeon Master's Guide (D&D 3rd Edition) You'll really only need this if you're planning on DMing.
Character Development (optional)
  Resources Notes
Dungeons and Dragons Third Edition Hero Builder's Guidebook (D&D 3rd Edition) Probably not worth the money. Plus we have a couple copies already.
Tome and Blood: A Guidebook to Wizards and Sorcerers
Sword and Fist: A Guidebook to Fighters and Monk (A D&D(r) Accessory) Good information on prestige classes.
Defenders of the Faith: A Guidebook to Clerics and Paladins
Psionics Handbook (A D&D(r) Rulebook) If you want to be part or all Psion, you'll need this book.
Extras (optional)
  Resources Notes
Dungeons and Dragons Third Edition Monster Manual (D&D 3rd Edition)
Monster Compendium: Monsters of Faerun (A D&D(r) Accessory)

Preparing a Character

After you've gathered all of your references, it's time to design a character. There are a thousand ways of doing this of which this is just one. The order isn't especially important. The only important thing is that you come out the other side with a fully fleshed-out character that makes at least some sense.

  1. Choose a Class
  2. Rolling the Bones or Determining Character Attributes
  3. Back Story
  4. Buy a miniature

Congratulations!
 You're Ready to Play
