Character attributes like strength, dexterity, and intelligence are determined by the roll of the dice ... 108 of them actually. It may seem complicated at first, but it's really not. This method seems to give the fairest results while allowing some personalization at the end.

Here's how it goes:

1. Roll 3d6* twelve times and write down the results in a circle.
* - Dice rolling: 3d6 means roll 3 six-sided dice (or one six-sided die 3 times) and add the results. You get a number from 3 to 18.
2. Do it two more times.
3. From those, circle the the sequence of six numbers that have the highest total, or after going through the remaining steps will yield the best sequence for the character you've chosen.
4. Rotate the resulting number in any way to give the best results in attribute order.
5.
STR   - Strength
DEX   - Dexterity
CON   - Constitution
INT   - Intelligence
WIS   - Wisdom
CHA   - Charisma
6. To finish up, you have 3 more points to distribute as you like and one point to move from one attribute to another.

This point distribution should serve to raise any low scores and to better match the scores with the chosen class.

Although the numbers in the example are fairly mediocre, the high wisdom score is well suited to the druid for which they were meant.
