Less often exposed during volcanic eruptions or found in water, gems can be found in thier original location, known as a primary deposit or in a secondary deposit seperate from the mother rock. Gemstones are minerals caught in cooling rock formed over thousands of years, an exception of course are organic gemstones, which are derived from plants and animals. Mined in hostile terrain all over the world. Excavation techniques include shaft mining for deep earth embedded deposits or tunnel mining within pre-exsistant mountain cavities with hand tools.
Linked to a variety of religions, gemstones and their spiritual and healing properties are thought to associate the twelve birth stones with the twelve stones on the high priest's breastplate in the Bible. Regardless of religion or culture, gemstones have always had a place in history. Early civilization used gemstones as jewelry, amulets and even currency.
