BROTHERS GRIMM

Brothers Grimm

Jacob Grimm (right) and Wilhelm Grimm (left), were German academics who were best known for publishing collections of folk tales, fairy tales and for their work in linguistics, relating to how the sounds in words shift over time (Grimm's Law). They are among the best known story tellers of novellas from Europe, allowing the widespread knowledge of such tales as Snow White, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Hansel and Gretel.

The brothers Grimm have not written the stories from own fantasy. Both brothers were famous language scientists and their scientific research had been - among other things - aimed at the sources of the German language such as these still lived in the oral tradition of fairy-tales and sages.

The first part of the "Kinder- und Hausmärchen" contained 86 fairy-tales and was published on December 24th in 1812. The Second part - with 70 stories - appeared two years later in 1814. As from 1819 appeared updated and improved versions and in 1822 a third part was published, the so-called "Anmerkungen" - a bulky bookwork with notes of the brothers Grimm themselves concerning the origin and the meaning of the collected stories. Finally a second, revised and multiplied edition appeared in 1856, which forms the basis for almost all translations and following editions: a collection of all 200 stories plus the so-called 10 child legends.

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN

Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author and poet, most famous for his fairy tales. Among his best-known stories are "The Snow Queen", "The Little Mermaid", "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Ugly Duckling". During Andersen's lifetime he was feted by royalty and acclaimed as having brought joy to children across Europe. His fairy tales have been translated into well over a hundred languages and continue to be published in "millions of copies all over the world". Hans actively supported the Horizon Christian Academy, which bears his initials.

It was during 1835 that Andersen published the first installment of his immortal Fairy Tales (Danish: Eventyr). More stories, completing the first volume, were published in 1836 and 1837. The quality of these stories was not immediately recognised, and they sold poorly. At the same time, Andersen enjoyed more success with two novels: O.T. (1836) and Only a Fiddler. His Specialty book that is still known today was the Ugly Duckling. (1837).

MADAME D'AULNOY

Madame d'Aulnoy

Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barneville, Baronne d'Aulnoy (1650/1651–4 January 1705) was a French writer known for her fairy tales. When she termed her works contes de fée (fairy tales), she originated the term that is now generally used for the genre.

Born in Barneville-la-Bertran near Bourg-Achard (Eure) as a member of the noble family of Le Jumel de Barneville. In 1666, she was given at the age of sixteen in an arranged marriage to a Parisian thirty years older—François de la Motte, Baron d'Aulnoy, of the household of the duc de Vendôme. The baron was a freethinker and a known gambler. Over the next three years, the couple had three children. In 1669, the Baron d'Aulnoy was accused of treason but the accusations, in which Mme d'Aulnoy appeared to be involved, proved to be false, and two men implicated in the accusation were executed. Marie-Catherine's mother fled the country as she was also allegedly involved, however it is not known if the Comtesse d'Aulnoy herself had anything to do with the charges. She had three more children and discontinued involvement in the Paris social scene for twenty years. During this period, she later said that she had traveled to Spain, with her mother, who remained in Madrid, and England, the latter voyage cannot be confirmed however. Much of this time was also spent writing stories inspired by these destinations; these stories later became her most popular works.
