CHURCH HISTORY
One of the four Philippine Baroque Churches inscribed in UNESCO's World
Heritage List, the oldest stone church in Metro Manila was built in 1586
and completed in 1606. An intricately carved door opens to the church. Of
great interest are the XIXth century chandeliers, the pulpit, the side
chapels, the tombstone on the floorings, and an 18th century pipe organ.
Like an impregnable fortress, San Agustin has withstood the ravages of
time both brought by nature and by man; earthquakes and typhoons, Chinese
and Dutch attacks, the British Occupation Force and the Philippine-Spanish
War, Dewey's bombardment, the bloody and destructive Japanese Occupation,
and the equally devastating return of MacArthur's troops.
WHY WE CHOSE THE
CHURCH
"When Mike and I were on the first few days of agreeing to get married, Mike told me to start
looking for churches. When we were still in college, we always thought
of getting married at Santuario De San Antonio in Forbes, Makati City. But
the time I inquired with them, they said they were fully booked already
for the month of December. Well, what a wishful thinking since we only
have four months left for the wedding preparation. I immediately told
Mike about this and he said not to lose hope and he will marry me
wherever church and during this time, we had confirmed the wedding date
and time. He then suggested Manila Cathedral so I immediately called them
but they were already fully booked too.
While I was sending
Mike an email, I searched in the web for churches. Behold! One picture
really caught my attention but I don't know what church is it. It was
later that I found out it was San Agustin Church. I informed Mike and sent
him pictures of the church and so he told me to inquire. Yey! Our date is
still open for morning wedding which Mike prefers although I want to have
an evening wedding inline for a garden reception. So we compromised and
said that this is it. So the next day, I called and pencil booked San
Agustin. The following day, before going to San Agustin to pay the
reservation with my parents, we scouted for other churches like Shrine of
Jesus, Reclamation Area, Pasay City but was also fully booked. So we
proceeded to Intramuros but dropped by at Manila Cathedral to verify the
availability of the date. The attendant gave us the logbook and indeed, it
was fully booked. So we went ahead to San Agustin Church. Wow! The church
was indeed awesome and breathtaking! It was the first time we saw the
church and we were indeed amazed! We went to their office and paid the
reservation. I told Mike everything about it and we were both so happy
since we now have our wedding church."
