| The 2.5 liter DOHC multivalve inline six (internally known as the M50TU B25, in my case, since I have VANOS) is rated at 189 hp @ 5900rpm and 181 lb-ft of torque at 4700. Looking at these numbers, you are right to assume that the bottom end is a bit thin on torque, requiring a higher-rpm launch to achieve decent 0-60's and 1/4 mi times. The later 328 i/is addressed this issue by flattening out the torque curve, making more torque available at lower engine speeds. However, this was at cost of high rpm breathing at which the 325i/is excels. Acceleration in the 325is is tubine like, with a surge of power increasing as rpms build. The real power of this engine kicks in at around 4000 rpm. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Here are the performance figures that Car and Driver published when they had a 1992 (non VANOS) 325i for their 30K mile long term test. Notice the drop in 0-60 and 1/4 times. These figures are E46 328i numbers! German engines are notorious for being very tight out of the factory and this is proof of how this engine started performing once it was broken in. One very important figure to look at here is the street start number. This is a very good measurement of an engine's flexibility. When the car was new, see the big gap between the 0-60 and the 5-60-indicating that there was very little torque to pull the car from a roll. Most likely the 0-60 was done with a high rpm clutch drop. BUT at 30K, once the engine has broken in, the difference between the 0-60 and 5-60 is closer, not to mention that the street start had been reduced by 1 sec. Think of a street start as a normal launch off the line. I have the figures for the E46 328i and they are virtually identical to these numbers (I will post the article for the naysayers shortly). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
