| MWR regularly receives mail from McDonalds workers who are pissed off because they can’t afford a night out, or are exhausted from working 70 hour weeks to support a family or pay off debts, or whose studies suffer because of the hours they have to put in at McDonalds just to survive. We receive mail filled with rage at the ridiculous contrast between our miserable wages and McDonalds fat profits. This sense of injustice is what originally inspired MWR and it is burning strongly, now more than ever. Every time we go to work we know that a greedy few are getting rich off our backs and we cannot afford to keep giving up so much of what rightfully belongs to us. I’m writing this in a freezing room because just now I can’t afford any heating- that is a priority for me, whether a McDonalds shareholder can afford a garage door that opens as he drives towards it and a Spanish golfing holiday where he receives professional coaching in a relaxed but professional environment is not. | |||||||||||||||||||

At the time of writing, February 2003, there are McDonalds employees in the UK who are earning less than £4.00 an hour, there is still no overtime rate and the contemptible practice of discriminating against under 18s with lower wages continues. |

| This, from a company that makes billions of dollars profit and spends billions of dollars on advertising every year, is intolerable. We know that there are numerous jobs that pay as badly as McDonalds, indeed our situation is unique in only one sense- we have MWR, we have a network through which we can struggle to change things. During the infamous McLibel trial, the high court ruled that McDonalds paid such low wages that it depressed wages throughout the catering sector. We have the power to raise those wages but we have to fight for it ourselves- the government loves big business and low wages, that’s why their minimum wage was such a sham. So, in 2003, we will campaign for £6.00 an hour basic starting rate for all McDonalds workers, regardless of age or location. We hope to achieve a satisfactory settlement through negotiation by the end of September, but if that proves impossible we will take direct action- strike, sabotage, go slows, etc. McDonalds know that our network is growing all the time and that in 2002 we were already capable of organising an impressive day of disruption. £6.00 an hour basic starting rate for all McDonalds workers! Y? Because we’re worth it too! If you would like to support the campaign for £6.00 an hour, please contact us here. |
