The lord and master of the vengeance demons and
the demon dimension Arashmahar, D'Hoffryn has been responsible for some
of the most vicious creatures to walk the earth. In 880 A.D., he was
responsible for the transformation of the Swedish woman Aud into the
demon Anyanka, long feared across the moral globe. At some point before
the Crimean War, he also created the demon Halfrek, Anyanka's companion
and one of his favourite aides. In 1998, Anyanka lost her powers and was
trapped in the form of Anya Jenkins. D'Hoffryn refused to restore her
powers, claiming that if she were worthy she wouldn't have lost them. A
year later, he offered Willow Rosenberg the opportunity to become a
vengeance demon, but she turned him down. Regardless of their history,
both D'Hoffryn and Halfrek attended Anya's wedding to Xander and it was
Xander's jilting of her that persuaded D'Hoffryn to offer Anya her
powers back. However, he ultimately grew unsatisfied and enraged that
Anyanka wanted to undo her latest wish, D'Hoffryn punished her by
executing Halfrek and removing her powers. He initially sent demons to
kill Anya following the confrontation, but eventually left her with a
chilling warning: her death would come... for from Beneath You It
Devours.
