Amy Madison's father left the family home, calling
his wife Catherine a witch. He left Amy with her mother, and Amy
realised that her father's words were truthful: Catherine Madison
possessed the ability to harness the black magicks and in 1997,
confronted Amy with her desire to become a cheerleader. Amy had no such
compulsion, so Catherine used her magick to swap bodies with Amy so that
she could relive her glory days as head cheerleader of Sunnydale High.
When she began to use her magick to harm the other competitors that
stood in her way, Catherine drew the unwanted attentions of Buffy, who
discovered the truth. In a heated battle with Catherine, the spell was
reversed and Catherine disappeared into an unknown prison where she
would forever be contained. Amy moved in with her father, and soon
developed an interest in witchcraft herself. She was a powerful witch,
and aided Xander in a love spell a year later which almost killed both
him and Cordelia and set the female population against each other in a
desperate urge to seduce the young man. A year later, Amy became a
target of a demon masquerading as two murdered children and to prevent
being burned at the stake, Amy transformed herself into a rat.
Unfortunately, the fledgling Willow was unable to use her own magicks to
restore Amy to human form. It took Willow three years to finally
transform Amy back to her normal self. Angry with Willow for failing to
restore her, Amy turned against her and began to fuel Willow's growing
addiction to magick by introducing her to Rack, a powerful warlock who
dealt with dark magick. Amy became quite skilled in the black arts and
hexed Willow, causing Willow to choose the form of her punishment for
'squandering' her abilities when she tried to destroy the world. Amy's
plot was discovered by Kennedy, but before the Potential Slayer could
confront the jealous witch, Amy transported her away. It is unknown how
Amy knew details of Willow's recent activity: presumably she had been
spying on the witch since she left her side a year earlier. Afterwards,
Amy presumably left Sunnydale before it was destroyed.
