Untuned percussion instruments are those which are not tuned to a specific note, or notes.  The majority of these instruments are made of wood or metal, and are simply struck or shaken to produce a sound.

Untuned percussion instruments include shakers, maracas and woodblocks. Bells which have been untuned to a specific note are also classed in this catagory.  The triangle and cymbals are perfect examples of untuned instruments.

Although some drums are untuned, all drums cannot be classed in this catagory, as some can be tuned to be notes, such as the snare drum, which can be tuned using a peg on the side to tighten or loosen the skin on the top.
