Tuned percussion instruments are those which are tuned to a specific note, or notes. This section includes the xylophone (see picture above) which is a series of wooden bars laid out in the style of a keyboard. This is hit with beaters or mallets. Hard beaters produce a crisper sound than padded ones.
The glockenspiel is similar, but the bars are made of metal. Chimes are tuned, to give the impression of church bells. Tubular bells also have a church bell effect. Timpani can be tuned to pitches, and are therefore tuned percussion instruments too. |
