The saxophone is a woodwind instrument with a single reed, and a mouthpiece very similar to a clarinet. Because of its brass colour, it is often mistaken for a brass instrument, but it isn't! It has fingerpads which are pressed/released to produce different notes.

The saxophone was invented by Antoinne (Adolphe) Sax, in 1840. but it wasn't really taken seriously and only featured occasionally as a replacement instrument in some bands. It became popular at the beginning of the 20th century, and was used in jazz and blues music.

The saxophone has a range of two and a half octaves - from the B flat below middle C to the F an octave higher than the top line. There are several types of saxophone - the most common are the alto (E flat) and the tenor (B flat), but there are also the soprano saxophone, and the least common baritone saxophone.
