I wrote an article titled "Random Thoughts on Hinduism" in September 2003 and e-mailed it to some of my friends. After reading it, they said that it is good and asked me whether I had written it myself. So I thought it best to write this introduction to the article.

This article is the result of my readings on Hindu Scriptures and related subjects over the past few years. I maintained hand-written notes about whatever I read. So, while writing this last month, I did not have to refer to the original books. While reading the Rig Veda, one thought had flashed through my mind every now and then and that is that the names like Ganga , Yamuna , Saraswathi , Sindhu etc were names of rivers which the Aryans knew when they were in Iran. It is my belief that when they migrated to India, they gave the same names to rivers they came across in the Indian sub-continent. I believe that this is the reason why the river Saraswathi is imaginary and exists only in the Vedas. However, the idea seems to be far-fetched.

The conclusion that the Siva Lingam represents Mount Kailas is strictly my own. I have an aerial photograph of Mount Kailas. Enlarged copies of this photo are exhibited in some of the Siva temples. The Kusa Lava Pureeswarar temple in Koyambedu, Chennai is one of them. Anybody who takes a look at this photograph will arrive at the same conclusion.

II believe that Religion and Cosmology are related subjects. Both deal with Creation - the former on the philosophical plane and the latter on the materialistic plane. Cosmology is the Science of the Universe. I got interested in Cosmology after I read a very interesting book on the subject by Professor Fred Hoyle 25 years ago. Afterwards I read every available book on the subject in the British Council Library, Madras. I very nearly bought a telescope but settled for a powerful pair of Japanese binoculars. With this I observed every star constellation. I was astonished to see the craters on the moon, the Orion Nebula and the Andromeda galaxy with the binoculars. The paragraph I have written in the article about the Scientific view on the creation of the Universe is updated till August 2003.

The article is meant to give my Hindu brothers and sisters an overall idea about their Scriptures without getting into details. I hope all of you will find it informative and interesting.
