The sacred meal is a simple one of bread and wine, yet it is a most critical act for the witch. It is a most critical act for any person. There are many rites for the sacred meal from the religious traditions of the world: shabbat supper, passover seder, cakes and ale, the red meal or housle, the blot, the thysia, etc. And of course, that holiest of holies, the eucharist. These were and are not always limited to bread and wine. Indeed, with the eucharist, the bread and wine is the body and blood of Jesus, who is in turn the passover lamb. In its perfect form, this banquet is a sacrament and a great mystery. Bread and wine become the god/dess, and the god/dess herself is the food we receive. The sacred meal bespeaks of the cosmology of the universe. It puts before us that god/dess is our sustenance in all things, through all things. The sacred meal is a moment of intimate encounter with god/dess that gives our souls new eyes. Then with these new eyes, we look again.
