Researching Jobs and Employers
Before you go out on an interview, you will want to be knowledgeable about the job, the organization, the industry, and the geographic area in which the job for which you are interviewing is found. Your school's library, your local public library, and your school's career center (they help alums, too) are invaluable resources for this kind of research.
Researching Jobs
If this is your first job, or you are a career changer, be sure that you know what is involved in the job for which you are interviewing. Check out the career profile sites listed above, and check the library for books on careers in your field. You can always get basic information from the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Researching Companies or Organizations
Some good links below, but you'll probably need to visit the library to do a good job. If the employer has Web site, visit it. Use the library's business reference sources to find out about the organization's products, services, organization, and finances. Search for news and business/professional press articles about the organization. Find out about the people at the top of the organization, and if possible, the people you will meet at the interview.
FreeEDGAR A commercial site offering free access to the EDGAR database. Use to find 10K reports (annual tax filings) for U.S. public corporations. This site requires registration.
Annual Report Service Links to online annual reports. Some are in PDF format. May be requested in hard copy.
Hoovers Online Offers limited free access to Hoover's company profiles. More information available for a fee.
Wetfeet Company Profiles Very brief company profiles. Their Insider Guides book series provides in-depth information on selected companies, at a modest cost.
Guidestar Free access to financial information about registered nonprofit organizations in the U.S. Registration is required. This information is hard to get elsewhere.
IdeaList Information about nonprofit organizations.
Volunteer Action Center From Florida International University. If you are interested in a career with a non-profit organization, you may be interested in these profiles.
Researching Industries
Find out everything you can about the state of the industry in which you are seeking employment. The business section at the library is a major resource. Look also for articles in the business/professional press.
Webfeet Industry Overviews Nice capsule overviews of selected major industries available for free. The Insider Guides provide in-depth information on selected industries, at a modest cost. Check your library's holdings before purchasing.
