Origins and Ownership

The first version of this site was developed by Karen Hartman for the Kilmer Library at Rutgers University in the mid 1990s. When, in 1997, Ms. Hartman left her position at Kilmer Library for another opportunity, responsibility for the site was assigned to Leslie Murtha. Due to the expansion of the Web in the late 1990s, the site was reorganized and greatly expanded at that time. The site is now owned, maintained, and made available by Leslie Murtha, as a public service. A version of the guide is maintained by the Rutgers University Libraries.

Ms. Murtha grants the Rutgers University Libraries the right to continue to use the organizational structure and text written by her in their version of the guide for as long as they see fit, provided that she is given credit, in writing/text, on the RUL web site and in any printed material that reproduces or discusses the guide or any portion thereof, for her contributions. Copyright to the material is held, and has always been held by Ms. Murtha, in accordance with the provisions of the contract between Rutgers University and the AAUP regarding ownership of research and writing conducted by members of the faculty, regardless of any declarations to the contrary.

Scope of the Site

This site endeavors to include online resources of all sorts that are relevant to career development and job searching. Because the site originated in a university library, resouces are generally appropriate for users who have attended college for at least a brief time; most of the job opportunities will require an associate degree or higher, with the exception of those that target students seeking summer jobs, part-time employment, and internships. Sites for blue-collar workers have not been extensively incorporated at this time.

The site is international in scope; however, sites in languages other than English have not been rigorously reviewed.

Most of the sites included are free of charge to the job seeker. A few fee-based sites have been included, where they seemed to offer particularly valuable services, or where no free sites in a particular category could be identified. Some sites promote individuals or products, but also offer free resources. Their inclusion should not be taken as an endorsement of the products or services.

This is a resource guide; no guarantee is stated or implied regarding the quality, integrity, legality, privacy, etc. of any of the sites included. The annotations reflect the personal opinions of the author based on observations at the time of the last review. Listing a site in this guide does not constitute and endorsement of the site or its owners or content. The author has no association with the providers of these resources, other than her own professional associations. No advertising is accepted on this site.
