Ross Welch Presidents Report
Greetings Music Lovers,

Well, here we are at the start of a brand new Murwillumbah Musicians Club Inc. year, and the sky’s the limit, I reckon. Now, that’s exactly how I opened last year’s first president’s report and, to be absolutely honest, the “grand vision” I had for our club back then and the simple means to bring the dream to fruition are still basically the same; it’s as though it’s the same tune, yet this time around with a new revitalised arrangement.

Anyhow, what I see happening from now on is the steady emergence of MMC Inc as an organisation that genuinely honours The Music, serves its members and the community at large, all at once. In this way, it could well come to provide a shining example as an ethical and sustainable business or work operation for others. Without taking the spontaneity and enjoyment out of the process, given the almighty influence of Music, this is a major responsibility for our club, I reckon. Also, on this note, I ask all members to consider the club as being their business and the fact that what’s-in-it–for-them will correspond more or less to what it is, and how they contribute to their club. Furthermore, on the subject of why do we need a “club”, it is obvious that in most, if not all cases, all successful professions, trades, industries and movements loyally support, and are likewise supported by an umbrella organisation. That is to say, for an instance, that with due care and attention, MMC Inc could act effortlessly as an

effective small-business-incubator, as well as being a valuable resource for furthering existing businesses; even if that business is no more than us coming out and sharing good time.

On the nuts and bolts level, we are auspicing a country dance-hall event on Friday 26 September at Chillingham Hall. This “brave new work” could be beginning of a club program that will give greater exposure and rewards to our local musical talent. It is expected that these gains will be naturally forthcoming by the virtue of outlying communities being served well, with a diverse range of quality and all-inclusive entertainment. This endeavour is about extending our operations into “fresh new fields” as was proposed this time last year. We also have a team of three entertainment co-ordinators. This expansion will add greater variety in, and enjoyment to our monthly NOTE for NOTE jam/showcase and club fund-raising night, sponsored by the COURT HOUSE HOTEL. There is also some research going into the feasibility of our club presenting music education workshop programs that will enhance musical understanding and participation in our community. A particular emphasis may be placed on world music, indigenous music and cross-cultural styles.

To keep our club on track with these new measures, we are utilising a simple business-analysis and planning method. An “Ethical Business Venture Overview” relating to this

method was featured, in our last August newsletter. The first step in employing what is called the “Goals & Measures” method is to formulate a “Purpose Statement”. In the case of our club, this will be a collective Purpose Statement. Consequently, in order to get the ball rolling, on behalf of MMC Inc; I invite all music lovers to submit their personal versions of a brief Purpose Statement; such being a few inspired words they believe could go well towards empowering all local musical concerns. These contributions, with your name and contact details, can be emailed to [email protected] or placed in suggestion boxes at Murwillumbah Music or the COURT HOUSE HOTEL, over a four week period. After this time, at a special Goals & Measures meeting, we could then get down to quickly and surely negotiating a club Purpose Statement; one that seeks to genuinely serve all music lovers, regardless of their personal tastes.

In closing, I welcome all our new members and wish every music lover the best for the coming year and beyond, and sign off with two quotes business or work; one from a book called,”THICK FACE BLACK Heart” on “thriving and succeeding in everyday life and work”….., which reads, “Three Principles of Work: Purpose, Perseverance, and Patience”; and the other from Kahlil Gibran’s, THE PROPHET, which simply declares, “work is love made visible”.

Cheers
Ross Welch
