Contents¡@ Union Services Are you having any problems settling into uni? Is the new-found pressures of university life, lectures or course material getting to you? Are you looking for a job or a place to live? There are a host of services provided by the student union as well as the university. If you have never ventured past the second floor of the union building (except during your host tours during O'week) then you probably do not know where many of the services provided by the union are. Here's a little quiz. Do you know where each of the following services are? (In other words, how well a job did your guide during O'week do)
There is also the Student Resource Centre located on the third floor. In here, you can find all types of arty-crafty type material for any special projects as well as a colour photocopier. Bullwinkles is a Student Union shop located in the Frank Tate Building, opposite the Science Education Plaza (and the ERC). Here you can find all types stationery, art supplies, lab coats, computer disks and lollies, as well as get cheap photo processing and photocopies onto transparencies. It's open Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 5.30pm, and Friday from 8.30am to 4pm, tel. 03 9344 8569. Melbourne University Overseas Student Society (MUOSS), the international arm of the Student Union, has a lounge room on the second floor of the Union House. Here's also a place to sit down and have a chat to other overseas (or non overseas) students from other faculties, as well as a quiet place to have lunch. Whilst most of you may not need to use or visit these support services, make sure you know where they are in case you do. Finally, remember it's your union and you've paid for it through your fees, so make the most of it.
Melbourne University Student Union (MUSU) Student Unionism is about students. It exists to protect, to promote and to develop student interests in a manner that is truly relevant, participatory and fun. It is about fostering the intellect and celebrating the diversity of all students. Education standards are a serious and continual concern for the Student Union. Your Student Union is committed to ensuring that accessible, affordable and high quality education prevails. The Student Union is striving to ensure that the needs and concerns of all students are always at the forefront of the University's agenda. Importantly, however, it's a broad university and one's university experience should be about far more than education. Therefore, your Student Union not only strives to ensure education of the highest possible standard, it provides many wonderful and relevant services for all students. Your Student Union provides everything from a dentist and legal support, to the arts, clubs and societies, fun activities and student representation. Let it mean something to you. Student Unionism is built on the premise that all students have something important to contribute to their Student Union. It is you Student Union. It is important that you join it, use it and be active in it. ¡@ Melbourne University Overseas Students Service (MUOSS) MUOSS is a representative for all international students enrolled at the University of Melbourne. As the international student community is vastly growing at Melbourne, major attention has been placed on the needs of international students and the problems they face. MUOSS helps gives the 'voice' of the international student body a higher level of representation where certain actions can be made to improve the lives of international university students. MUOSS also organises social, cultural, welfare and educational events throughout the year, which provide opportunities to mingle with Australian students, as well as other international students. MUOSS is there to inform you about how to get the most out of your time at university, and about the services available for international students. Another way of conveying news and events to students is through the quarterly magazine published by MUOSS called The Voice, which acts as an open forum for you to raise your concerns and opinions. If there are any queries or issues that you think should be raised, or you are just looking for a place to hang out and have coffee, please don't hesitate to come up to the MUOSS lounge, located on the second floor of the Union Building. The Lounge ofers free tea and coffee and international newspapers and magazines in a relaxing atmosphere. Phone: + 61 3 9344 4801
