1/15/02 - Expectations for THIMUN

The delegates for this years Mexico delegation, are anxiously awaiting the day to board the train to go to The Hague International.  For many, this will be the first time and a brand new experience, as this will be the “Real Deal”… this is what all year, we’ve been preparing for! Of course, it’s as real as it can be, being a simulation of a debate.  The team from Heidelberg is immensely excited.  Privileged to have such a promising team, we all expect the best.  Many resolutions have been debated during after school practice sessions already and are almost in final form to be taken to the Hague and be used in the first day of lobbying.  Stephanie Hendrix of the Human Rights commission took head on the contradictory and controversial question of Capital Punishment. This is her first year on the MUN team and has done extremely well having her resolution be passed at the MADMUN conference in Mannheim in late November.  Brian Mueller is on the Disarmament Commission and is writing his resolution on the ABM Treaty.   Sean Bryan will be on the 4th Special Conference Political.  He has decided to tackle the problem of de-colonization.  But he is also deeply concerned about the Question of Kashmir.  He believes that this might be a good area with would attract such terrorist leaders as Osama Bin Laden, if it is not resolved soon.  As well as being in though about this, he also is deeply disturbed about the terrorism that goes on between the fighting forces in Kashmir.  And of course, we can’t forget those that are going as a different country, such as JR Orlando.  JR is a delegate from Thailand, in the 2nd Economic and Financial committee, and will be in deep discussion about various sanctions, whether or not these sanctions should be placed upon countries, lifted, or removed.  Cassia Herndon is a delegate representing Georgia and will be dealing with the responsibility of whether or on to create War Tribunals for the Afghanistan. This discussion topic will be debated in the 6th General Assembly, also known as the Legal Committee.
Many different view points help to enrich all of those that are going to be taking the eight to nine hour train ride from the Heidelberg Bahnhof January 27.  At least we’ll get an early start!  We’ll be meeting at 5:30 to catch our train! Unluckily for some, we have our winter formal the night before, so many of us will be quite tired that early in the morning! But then again, who wouldn’t be?
