Mannheim American-Deutches
1st Annual MADMUN Conference After-action Report Heidelberg had a great time at MADMUN this year. Several of our resolutions made it to General Assembly, and two of our delegates, Craig Lee and Brian Mueller, received "best delegate" awards for their committees. Special thanks to Meghan Teich for her excellent performance as Secretary General, and for Jodi Erickson, Megan Lambert, and Christina Jelly for their roles as committee chairs. The only bad part of the experience was a scare we had on Friday. During committee debates, the Secretary General came in with an important announcement. She said that on November 29, rebels within Pakistan overthrew Gen. Musharraf's regime. Gen. Musharraf and his cabinet had fled to Singapore, which had granted him asylum. The rebels were currently advancing on Pakistan's nuclear weapons facilities, which were being defended by loyalist forces and a US Marine task force. Losses were estimated to be in the hundreds, and the Marines were reported to be fighting a losing battle. The embassies of the United States, United Kingdom, France, and India had been surrounded, and a mob was preparing to assault them. The rebels made several demands, including: 1. The immediate cessation of US attacks on
Afghanistan, The Secretary General then said that we all had 15 minutes to write a policy statement on the matter and present them in committees. In addition, the ambassadors of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, USA, UK, France, Russia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran were called out to give statements to the Security Council. Understandably, we were all very upset. We believed that these events had actually happened, and that a possible nuclear war was imminent. Several people refused to give policy statements on the matter, and Japan walked out of committee in disgust. After giving the policy statements, many of which were marked with tears, the committee chairs announced that it was all a fictional scenario, put forward to simulate an emergency in the UN. We had received no warning, and all agreed it was in bad taste, given recent events. We hope that they do not try this again in future conferences. Other than that one spot, the conference went well. No resolutions got bashed, and several good ones were presented. We all had a valuable learning experience for THIMUN. We hope to attend next year's MADMUN, as well.
