BIOGRAPHY: In a note from Pleasant Dowell dated 12/31/1871 to L. C. Draper, she refers to Richard as being over ninety years old and retains in mind.  She also spoke of a $500.00 bet he made during the War of 1812 when he was serving in Richmond.  The bet was over two mules being able to pull any two of their best horses.  In this same letter she refers to Richard's uncle being Thomas Dowell and his wife being a Warren.
