BIOGRAPHY: On Nov. 5, 1834 in Albemarle Co, VA., Major Dowell aged 70 declares he was in service at Albemarle Barracks under Capt. Burke one month.  He was drafted in Albemarle Co. under Capt. Dalton in the fall of 1780 and marched to Richmond and was there under Bennett Henderson.
After this he was drafted again and marched under Col. Lindsay from Albemarle to Richmond upon the old mountain road.  Upon his return he was in service at the Barracks in Albemarle under Capt. George Rice and James Hawkins, manager, where he was employed as a blacksmith for about five months.  This was in the Continental Line.  He resided in Albemarle his entire life.
