Carol, who has had bilateral mastectomies, has chosen to wear prostheses most of the time. "I wear them when I go out and usually around the house. I don't wear them when in PJs or to bed." However, occasionally she has gone outside of the house without wearing them. "A few times I have gone without, outside of the house, especially when wearing layered clothing."

Melissa hasn't worn prostheses thus far, and believes being "flat" is not nearly as obvious as people would imagine. "I go out without prostheses on, and avoid getting strange looks or pointed fingers. In person, I've had one doctor ask if I'd had mastectomies or not yet, and another ask whether or not I'd had reconstruction. That did a lot to convince me!"
