Memorable Moments
1978-1981 (The Freeman Years)
Our first fundraiser. We set up a keg in the basement of Schroeder Hall and charged $5 per person. Can't remember how much we raised, but a lot of people showed up.
Our initial team kickoff meeting in Schroeder Hall.
Mike DiMino and Rick Freeman walking up and down Wells Street, soliciting businesses for monetary support for the program.
The great assistance of Dr. Lawrence Preo, Director of the Helfaer Recreation Center, who allowed us to practice late nights at the Rec Center.
Being part of a great group of guys who became family.
Outdoor practices at 18th and Kilbourn (otherwise known at 3rd world park)
No-hitters by Pete Sorg and Scott Gongorek that first season
Rick Freeman doing his best Tommy Lasorda imitation as our manager
Pitcher Greg Moore calling Rock Rickert the "runningest white boy" he'd ever seen.
Being asked by the Wisconsin Baseball Conference in the fall of 1978. That gave the program some legitimacy and gave us something tangible to compete for rather than just be a club team running around playing games.
Well coached, never say die TEAM with a very good record
Watching our program become a dynamic competitor in the WBC.
Spring training in the Rec Center with practices beginning at 11 PM and running until 2 AM.
After the bars parties nearly every Friday and Saturday night to which Rich Freeman always seemed to bring a quarter barrel from the "Lanche"
Defeating St Norberts at Washington Park in 1981. They had beaten us by about 10 runs the previous five times we played them, and we beat them, 5-4, on a game-ending double play )Rock Rickert to Dan Meckes to Greg Cergol) in the top of the ninth.
Excellent Party Team
Closing the Avalanche with Coach Freeman (who was bar manager) and cleaning up and drinking even more.
Giving "Spike" (Dennis Kapusta) shit! May you rest in peace. We'll catch up with you some day in Heaven.
My freshman initiation party when Senior Greg Cergol cornered me about taking out my ear ring.
Tough loss to MSOE my freshman year. We had never beaten them yet and had them 1-0 for 6 innings. In the 7th inning they bunted twice and Sammy (Tom Myers) had to come in for relief but we couldn't put them away.
Smuggling in quarter barrels to every game
1982-1986 (The Kapusta Years)
Being the only one not drinking at the Team Initiation Parties
Beating MSOE for the first of several times
Being part of a great group of individuals who "baseball-wise" accomplished a lot.
Dennis Kapusta getting too many speeding tickets coming home from Ripon.
The old: "beat it, beat it, beat it, boot it, boot it, boot it."
Wearing "eye-black" for the sole reason that it looks cool.
Meeting at Schoeder Hall for a game on a Saturday or Sunday morning with hangove
Doing team stretching in the outfield while discussing the previous night's escapades and trying to remember what in the heck we did.
Cow Tipping with Poss in Missouri
Picking on a very drunk Poss during the drive down to "Show Me" Baseball in Missouri.
The fights we had with Madison Tech
Poss organizing the 10,000 penny protest of the MU block party when MU started charging for beer at Block Parties
Tearing up all of our practice balls on that concrete practice field.
The first Florida trip.
Stopping in Nashville on the way back from Florida. Everett Bell turns to me in a bar and said two men were kissing (we were in a gay bar).
"Was the most fun I ever had playing sports" - Joe Z.
Poss puking in the outfield between pitches in Florida
Jail time in FL with three others (mug shots, prison clothes, handcuffed to a 2nd degree murderer!)...
Sleeping in the overhead luggage rack on the bus coming back from Florida.
Soo-doo-boo-dah (rest, rest) (the signature line from a song Desmond Hall was writing)
Beating teams badly was an experience never to be forgotten. I major portion of my MU experience.
Poss's house" The Pig House
Having a keg of beer for our fans at home games and finishing off the leftovers.
Initiation party at Hoppy's house my freshman year.
Padding the stats at Maranatha Bible College
Lots of convincing wins over UWM.
Gene Prisco & Dennis Kapusta, "You gotta TAAWK to her" (I can't even write what that was about)
Dean Roder's Hitting the "Elbows & Dick" equation
Ken Fuch's "mental stretches"
Beating "The Smacks"
The Smack Award, won by Kyle Morehardt one season for earning the most smack points (based on a complex calculation involving game ejections, goofy comments, beanball incidents, etc).
Hitting behind Kyle Morehardt as a freshman. I learned to hide in the dugout if he ever got two strikes for fear he might actually strike out. On the rare occasion he did strike out, I was protected from the flying bat and helmet.
Robbie P. reaching first base. First pitch, steal second. Second pitch, steal third. And, of course, his definition of the MU motto: "Marquette Baseball, we play better hung-over"
Murray giving up the base hit to the one-armed player at the end of a very long game.
Joe Irwin's inability to lay off the high heat or take it for a strike.
In rememberance: Dennis Kapusta, The "I ain't no Rock Kanutney" speech.
