Rhystic Spells: Can You Really Depend on Them?

Written on July 29

The rhystic spells are one of the new themes in Prophecy. If you look at them, they seem to be a good deal. The casting cost is less and some of them can be very powerful. That is, of course, if you can actually use them. Rhystic spells aren't that dependable. There are a lot of rhystic spells so I'm just going to discuss some of them.

Rhystic Delugeis a fairly powerful card, that is if you can actually get it to work. It's an enchantment whose casting cost is 2 that's able to tap a creature for . Pretty good huh? his card could really slow your opponent down. But it continues by reading "unless its controller pays 1". Over 80 to 90% of the time, your opponent will probably have at least one mana open, so what are the chances that you could get this to work?

This one's better than Rhystic Deluge and a little more reliable. Rhystic Study is an enchantment that allows you to draw a card when your opponent plays a spells but it still has the "unless the player pays 1." Your opoponent could easily pay the additional 1 to stop you from drawing a card. Rhystic Study could still be useful, everytime your opponent plays a spells he has to pay 1 to stop you from drawing a card. With this card you could slow down your opponent.

Some rhystic spells give you something and then gives you some more. That's only if your opponent doesn't stop you first. Rhystic Shield does just that. It's an instant that cost 2 and reads "creatures you control get +0/+1 until end of turn. They get an additional +0/+2 unless any player pays 2." This rhystic spell can be a really cheap spell, since it gives all your creatures +0/+3 until end of turn for only 2, at the right time. These spells are a lot better but its still not very dependable. Your opponent could have 10 lands and spending 2 mana won't be a big deal.

There are some close to dependable spells. Rhystic Syphon cost 5 and reads "unless target player pays 3, he loses 5 life and you gain 5 life." It's not that easy to have 3 mana open. Rhystic Syphon could be a nice spell to have once in a while.

There you have it, rhystic spells aren't that dependable but at the right time it could be very powerful and helpful to have around. Since it's not that dependable, I'll try to find alternatives to them if possible.
