The Truth of the Seals

Written on 4/21/00

Seals are enchantment versions of older cards. There's a seal for every color, Seal of Doom for black, Seal of Removal for blue, and other seals for different colors. Some are great but some just suck.

Seal of Doom is a black enchantment that cost 3 and reads "Sacrifice Seal of Doom: Destroy target nonblack creature. It can't be regenerated." This card is a great creature eliminator. For only 3 mana you could destroy a nonblack creature. It duplicates Dark Banishing but it's not as good as it. Dark Banishing provides the element of surprise while Seal of Doom is an enchantment. Since it's in play, your opponent will try to work around it by playing another creature to throw you off. Of course you could also play Seal of Doom when you have a creature you want to kill already in play. But here's one BIG reason that Dark Banishing is better. With Dark Banishing you can destroys those creature with haste (creatures that are unaffected with summon sickness), but with Seal of Doom, it has to be in play first. It won't be very effective against Sneak Attack, or other enchantments that brings out creatures. THAT is a big DIFFERENCE

Seal of Strength is an excellent example of how the enchantment version is less powerful than the real thing. Seal of Strength duplicates Giant Growth . Giant Growth's so powerful because of the element of surprise. Seal of Strength though is already in play. It won't be as effective as Giant Growth. Your opponent will already know that you have the ability to boost your creature so he'll be extra cautious.

Seal of Cleansing though is equally as good as its duplicate, Disenchant. Since Seal of Cleansing destroys an artifact or enchantment, it doesn't really matter if it's an enchantment or an instant.

The rest of the seal are Seal of Removal and Seal of Fire. Seal of Removal kind of sucks, all it does is return a creature to its owner's hand. Seal of Fire is a duplicate of Shock. There aren't any real significant difference between these seals and the real thing.

There are some difference between the seals and the its duplicates. The seals are enchantment so they could all be destroyed by Tranquility or Disenchant. The real things are all instants, so there's very little you could do about it. This point gives your opponent a way to take care of the seals.

Although a lot of people are happy about the seals, the seals just shows how the designers are running out of ideas. All the seals are just duplicates of older cards
