Nemesis: Blue Analysis

Written on 4/11/00

Many blue abilities are enhanced in this set. Card drawing, creature stealing, and new Spellshapers are some that were enhanced. Some cards even mimicked some older cards.

Everyone knows that card drawing is an important part of winning the game and blue is the king of card drawing. Another great card to add to the list of card drawers is the Accumalated Knowledge. Blue decks have longed for a good card drawer and now their pray have been answered. For only two mana you get to draw a card, plus if there are others in a graveyard you get to draw more cards. Put 4 in your deck and you've got yourself a great deal!!

Some blue decks are based around stealing other player's creatures. That's why Control Magic and Treachery are so popular. Well they're good but they're still enchantments so they can be destroyed.

Now the new card, Dominate, gives you the creature permanently. This means no annoying Disenchant can get in your way. This may sound good but in fact there is a problem to this card. It takes X and 3 more mana to cast this out. The X is for the casting cost of the creature and you know what this means. YOU NEED A LOT OF MANA!! A weenie 2/2 creature with a casting cost of 2 isn't a very desirable creature to steal. But to even get that, you'll have to pay 5 MANA!! Five manas just for that little 2/2, not a good price to pay is it? Imagine how you're going to take your opponent's GOOD creatures? I'll stick with Treachery or Control Magic or something else if I were you.

Of course new Spellshapers came with Nemesis. These guys aren't half bad too. The Stronghold Machinist can counter any noncreature spell for 2 mana but you have to discard a card. This card is good when there aren't any counters around. Another one is the Stronghold Biologist which can counter any creature spell. These Spellshapers can really come in handy if you're out of counters and you don't want your opponent to give you an onslaught.

There are some good creatures in this set. Stronghold Zeppelin is a great creature. For 4 mana you get a 3/3 flying creature. That's almost as good as Air Elemental. There aren't a lot of good creatures in blue so when I say this is good, it's good.

Another creature with potential is Rootwater Thief. If it deals damage to a player, you get to remove a card!! Isn't that self explanatory enough?!? You get to remove a card from your opponent's library, any card. This gives you a chance to see what he's got in his deck. Plus you could make it flying. That causes it to be harder to block.
