Are there any known bug issues related to MTGIE?

MTGIE uses a lot of system resources. Sometimes you may lose connections in as few as 3 games. Other problems may start happening with the table interface:

  • Buttons disappear from the screen
  • Cards disappear from the screen (specifically, the library)
  • Messaging window may stop functioning. If this happens and you really want to finish the game, both players may create tokens and exchange messages by editting the token text. (Mouse over the token to read all the text.)

You can cut down on the usage by choosing not to run the encyclopedia portion of the game. (You will not have access to the deckbuilder when you do this.) Just run the 'MagicOP' program. It's found in a folder called 'Online' that is located where you installed MTGIE. Running the program only starts up the playtable interface portion of MTGIE.

Why can't I load a deck on MTGPlay? I get an ODBC error and it closes down.

You will have to download an MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) update from the Microsoft website. Download one of the updates (2.8, 2.7, 2.6, or 2.5). Some players have reported that using 2.5 instead of 2.6 has allowed them to use MTGPlay. Use the one you feel will work best for your system. (I run Win98 and have used 2.5 sp2.) If you use an MDAC; download the security patch also. The MDAC update also seems to solve problems with those computers unable to execute MTGPlay in the first place.

Why can't I get MTGPlay to run?

The error says, "Can't open MTG Interactive Database '...magic.mdb'

You might need to tell MTGPlay where the 'magic.mdb' file is located. Go to "Game | Options..." The first option is to tell MTGPlay where your magic.mdb file is located. Click on the folder to browse to its location. Save the settings.

The error says, "Can't open MTG Interactive Database '...magic.mdb'  Error 430: Class does not support Automation or does not support expected interface (MTGPlay)"

Like the above question, download one of the MDAC updates.

The error is #2147467259 obdc driver manager, data source name not found, no default driver specified (microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC drivers)

Download the Microsoft Jet service pack from the same Microsoft website.

I don't see the images on the cards. What do I need to do?

You might not have the patches for the cards an opponent is using. Please download and install them.

In MTGPlay, if you can't even see your own cards, you need to reinstall MTGIE with a "FULL" install. This will install all the large and small jpg images onto your harddrive.

Why can't I see images on my opponent's cards?

You and your opponent may have different patches. Try using the "Download Missing Pictures" option in the Options menu.

Why are some card images missing; or the text is not listed properly?

Some of the WotC patches, particularly Torment and Judgment, make some improper listings to the card database. To fix this, you will need to have Microsoft Access to open a file called 'magic.mdb'. The password to gain access to the file is (7V9@GP_

You will need to modify the table called 'tblCards'. Once you know which card to look for, do a Find for the card name (modify the search settings to search other fields). Check the image path address and see where the actual image jpg is located (Images are located inside a folder named Images. And then separated into 2 groups: Largejpg and Smalljpg.) Edit the addresses to both the small and large jpg if necessary. You can also edit the rules text and/or Oracle text if necessary (some of the text put in by the patches are incomplete or have odd symbols instead).

For example, the Narcissism picture is located in 05xxx folder (5663.jpg). But it's not listed that way in the magic.mdb file. Make the change for the path to both the small jpg and large jpg.

Other images that are listed incorrectly: Goblin Spy, Aven Trooper, False Memories, Telekinetic Bond.

How come I cannot host a game (players aren't able to connect to my game that I am serving)?

Players may have problems connecting to host computers if the host is using a firewall software (Black Ice, ZoneAlarm, etc.) or hardware (Linksys, D-Link, NetGear, etc). To allow other clients to connect, temporarily disable the firewall or forward a port to your computer (check your manual for specific instructions) :

  • Forward port 1001 (or whichever port you want to serve MTGPlay) in firewall settings
  • Set your computer to the DMZ setting (check your firewall manual)
  • Disable your firewall (check your firewall manual) -- for WinXP, click Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, right-click the connection you use, and choose Properties. Click the Advanced Tab and uncheck the Internet Connection Firewall option.

What bugs are found in MTGPlay?

  • A player might get a rare 'Run Time Error'. The program will stop running and quit.
  • MTGPlay does not allow start a 'New Deck'. Solution: 'Clone Deck' instead. Add your cards and delete the cloned deck cards.
  • Cards and messages are slow to respond. The cause is having lots of cards on the playtable or poor internet connection.
  • Sometimes an incorrect deck will be loaded because MTGPlay sometimes shuffles the decklist as you select a deck to load. Solution: Re-select the correct deck.
