Terry Morriston Librarian,
gr. 9-12 Where I've Been Almost my entire
life
has been spent living in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh, PA. I even
went to college locally--University of Pittsburgh for both graduate and
undergraduate school. Presently I am living outside of Charlotte,
North Carolina, because my husband is working here and I am on
sabbatical. However, I will be
returning to Pittsburgh in January.
Having spent so much time in one area, I've been fortunate to have
gotten to know wonderful people who have influenced my life,
mostly my teaching colleagues. Because I have traveled extensively, I
have a wider picture to contrast with my smaller area. My Life as an Educator After teaching high
school English for several years, I transferred into the library of my
same school 18 years ago. I still consider myself a teacher with the
library as my classroom. I have the best job on the staff. I
enjoy the one-on-one interaction with students, the team lessons with
teachers, the changing level and content of the classes and the
development of my library program. In addition to the more
traditional
literacy skills classes, I have also established voluntary
monthly lunchtime
programs (book groups) for students. When I return from my
sabbatical, I want to expand the program to include web based lessons,
home access, after school programs and online discussion blogs. When I'm Not Working... No surprise that after
school I like to read, but I also like traveling, movies,
gardening. Baseball is my favorite sport but I will watch
football with my husband. Our travels have taken us to such totally
different places as China and Hilton Head. I haven't seen many movies
lately but among my favorites from last year are Mystic River, Love
Actually, Bend It Like Beckham and an indie film called The Bread My
Sweet. I wouldn't say I have favorite books but I have favorite
authors. Walter Mosely and Anne Perry are two of them. Web Sites I Like
www.ala.org - The American Library Association is thhe central organization for information for librarians especially for laws and legislation, or policy issues. www.amazon.com - Everyone knows you can buy from Amazonn but it can also be used as an information database to locate literary info or get book reviews. It also provides reading suggestions, " Customers who bought this book also bought...." www.nclive.org - Most states now have a home access database system for research. This one is North Carolina's version. To gain access, you must obtain a password from an NC library. Pennsylvania's version of this is www.powerlibrary.net. www.rottentomatoes.com - All about movies. Find trailers, newspaper reviews, discussion boards, user ratings. See if a movie is fresh or rotten. Unfortunately, it's starting to have too many advertisements. Use it before it gets worse. This is a personal home page and doesn't represent the opinions of my school. Last updated on Sept 20, 2004. |
