| There's more to the word "hydrogenated" than meets the eye. It is a process by which unsaturated fats have been altered from their natural liquid state into artery-clogging "saturated" fat. The resulting fat is far more dangerous than animal fats could ever be.. It is wise to be cautious each time you see, "Made with pure vegetable oils". It doesn't mean a thing if that particular oil has undergone "hydrogenation." |

| 1. Vegetable oil is mixed thoroughly with fine particles of nickel or copper. 2. It is heated to approximately 400 degrees and kept at that temperature for six hours. 3. Meanwhile Hydrogen *gas* is pumped through the mixture at high pressure and the excited hydrogen atoms penetrate the vegetable oil molecules which chemically changes them into "transfats" (transfatty acids). These are new, complex substances not found in nature. 4. This mixture must be kept very hot. If it cools down the whole production line will get clogged. 5.This mixture is then cooled down to form tiny hard "plastic" beads, known as 'hydrogenated' oil.. 6. The beads of hydrogenated oil are then mixed up with some more liquid oil and heated again to high temperatures. 7.When this cools, you have *margarine* (hydrogenated oil)! | Because these fats are not at all natural, and have a "plastic-like" quality, the body has great difficulty trying to use and eliminate them. They are prevalent in "processed" foods. Whenever you eat them, you are putting your body under extra pressure simply to deal with this substance that you do not really need to eat! In fact it takes 30 days for hydrogenated fats to go through the digestive process, the reason being that the body doesn't recognize them as natural foods and doesn't know what to do with them. In fact, it is thought that our immune system actually attempts to fight these unknown invaders leading to more autoimmune disease as well. Autoimmune disease is a situation where the body attempts to attack its own immune sytem. Americans have more heart attacks than any other country in the world! When you read about the horrible way these trans-fatty acids are made, we tend to wonder why they are still on the market. Dr. Walter Willett Ph. D. of the Harvard School of Medicine believes tranfats are the underlying factor in the high rate of cardiovascular disease in this country. |
