| Unfortunately, flying into Boston is expensive. You have four options for flying into Boston: Boston's Logan Airport, the Providence, RI Airport, the Manchester, NH airport, and the Worcester, MA airport. We have found that expedia and travelocity can help you find cheaper fares. We detail all four options below. Boston's Logan Airport Flying into Logan is definitely the most convenient option and almost always the most expensive. All major airlines (except Southwest) fly into Logan. In addition, flying in and out of Logan gives you a spectacular view of the city and the harbor. The Big Dig project has made getting to Boston and Cambridge from the airport a much more exciting adventure. Besides renting a car, you can take a cab ride to Cambridge will cost around $20 and will take 20-30 minutes (both will be higher in rush hour traffic). You can take a short bus trip from the terminal to the subway (the "T"). The T can take you to most locations in Boston and Cambridge for $1.00. (one-way). To take the T to Cambridge (budget an hour), you want to get on the blue line going inbound toward Government Center. Get off at Government Center and go inbound on the Green line. Get off on the first stop (Park Street) and find the outbound trains heading to Alewife. If you are not going to Cambridge, let us know and we will get you directions. A final option is to take the water shuttle across Boston Harbor. In the summer, this will give you a beautiful view of downtown and you might get to see some Harbor seals. The water shuttle stops in Boston and lets you off near the T's Blue Line (follow directions above). I got lost the first time I did this (Paul). Providence's Airport Flying into Providence is usually cheaper than Logan because it is served by Southwest Airlines. Southwest often has ticket specials for under $400-- check www.southwest.com. To get to Boston, you can rent a car (it is about an hour drive straight up I95, depending on traffic), take the commuter train, or take a bus. Bonanza bus lines runs busses hourly from 7:50 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and costs $32 round trip. For more information, call Bonanza at 888.751.8800 or visit them at www.bonanzabus.com. The bus lets you off at the T's South Station, which is serviced by the Red Line. Manchester's Airport Flying into Manchester is also cheaper than Logan because it is also serviced by Southwest. Although it too is about an hour drive from Boston (straight down I93), we do not know of bus or train service from Manchester. Therefore, if you fly into Manchester, you will probably have to rent a car. Worcester's Airport This regional airport has seen a recent increase in flights from nearby hubs and can be significantly cheaper than Logan. Worcester is about an hour drive from Boston via tollways. There are busses that run from Worcester Airport to Boston; but it will still probably save you money even if you rent a car. |
