Beowulf is written so simply and directly that there is not very much irony in it at all. When i say simply, I mean it lacks emotional deepness, not that it is easy to read because it isn't. In doing research, however, I found a theory that is ironic. One viem formerly and still very generally accepted is that Grendel and his mother and the dragon orginally represented hostile forces of nature, -such as darkness, winter, or the power of the sea. Something else a little ironic is that Grendel's mother avenged Grendel in much the same way that Beowulf avenged Hondscio and AEschere (who Grendel and Grendel's mother killed, respectively). There is not much irony in this story.
